So I've just watched Event Horizon, and the whole film reminded me a lot of unprotected Warp travel, and I've read up and apparantly lots of people hold the 'headcanon' that EH is mankinds first forays into warp travel.
When I watched Pacific Rim it reminded me quite a bit of 40k (Jaegers being Titans, Kaijus - Biotitans; they even have a 'Hivemind').
Are there any other films that really remind people of 40k?
Yeah Event Horizon's basically the #1. It fits perfectly into the 40k canon... y'know, minus the whole God-Emperor thing (but then again, they never mentioned that there wasn't a God-Emperor ).
Other than that... Edge of Tomorrow/Live Die Repeat was basically Militarum Tempestus vs Temporal Tyranids and Starship Troopers is pretty much Guard vs Nids (including fascist parody!). Pitch Black and Riddick are kind of like mercs vs a mutant, fighting on a Death World.
Oh and Planet of the Apes is whatever planet the Joakero come from... wait a minute... Statue of Liberty... that was our planet! YOU MANIACS! YOU BLEW IT UP! DAMN YOU! GOD DAMN YOU ALL TO HELL!!!

This really depresses seeing as Starship Troopers was the sci-fi book to introduce power armor. Actually, the whole vision of a power armored space fleet is largely in debt to Robert Heinlein. I know, this is the whole book vs. movie thing but the book of Starship Troopers is so much better and should invoke Space Marines vs Tyranids than Guard vs, Tyranids. The whole reason why it follows the mobile infantry is because they are power armored bad asses that look like giant apes. It goes into length, in the book, about how power armor even works and how there are different suits for different purposes. That movie did not do that book any bit of justice with people thinking Starship Troopers is Guard and not Space Marines...

I think that book is the basis for a very many Sci-Fi games, most including 40K. In 2nd edition one of the Tyranid players in our GW store said he was only playing them because they were the bugs from Starship Troopers --- a few years before the movie came out.
The 2nd Riddick movie reminded me of Chaos Marines as I was sitting in the theater watching it. Afterward, a coupe of friends also mentioned that without me bringing it up.

H.
The problem is that most people are now reminded more of the movie than the book. I still enjoy the movie as cheesy as it is but the book is so good and you see the start of things like 40k in that book. It is one of my top favorite books, especially sci-fi books along side Dune.
The first movie was good, if not downright great. Now the sequels... yeah they were not so good.

Without this, I almost lost a game once. It was scary. I almost took to buying fixed dice to ensure it never happened again.
The Dune movies somewhat describe the general situation with imperial nobels when they decide to fight one another over resources and worlds. Also the Harkonnen homeworld is basically a forgeworld, complete with toil and military aggression.

I'll definitely check these out
yeah it's that bad, skip the movie but read the book.
I second this notion. Read the book, it is fantastic.

The books were better at doing this but as you can see, I advocate books around here.

I have been meaning to read Dune for years now, but never have. However I had a free book trial thing on Audible, and I downloaded the audiobook of Dune, so it's waiting for me on my iPad when I get round to it.

well, "Come on, you apes! You want to live forever?" sounds much more AM than SM-esque... ps: johnny rico = ciaphas cain
And the best thing in the ST movies (aside a hot scene in #1, if you know what I mean):
Change 'Federation' for 'Imperium' and you'll have a perfect Imperum-esque song (should be sang by a Commisssar, of course)
I don't think it's fair to compare the Starship Troopers movie with the book. They are so different, pretty much the only things in common are a few names. Why not let them exist as different entities. I love the movie, I love the book, for entirely different reasons.
C'mon guys, if you want to see proper Starship Troopers, then look for the animated series Roughnecks - much, much better, and they're wearing power armour, plus they've got some of the various specialist suits such as the Marauders. And the MI really are complete badasses in it, at least as much as they could make them for older kids...
As for other movies, I love Battle Los Angeles. It's pretty much Tau vs. Imp Guard where the "guardsmen" are actual badasses and not a bunch of bullet magnet chumps!

Actually, I saw the aliens in Battle: LA as being more like the AdMech than the Tau. The ground troops and weapon beasts have a lot more in common with Skitarii and Sagitarii than they do Fire Warriors and Battlesuits/
The human army are definitely a PDF regiment though.
