Personally I think red Chaos Space Marines with gold trim look the most iconic and menacing and dislike the Slaanesh scheme the most. Death Guard with their infectious, pus-ridden bloated look required a lot of conversion skill to perfect, and the blue tzeentch / night-lord schemes have a magical/exotic aspect of Chaos to them, but not necessarily dangerous looking. Black Legion and Iron Warriors have a more neutral look to them, and the latter is a good place to perfect all your corrosive/rust techniques.

How do you roll? (even non Chaos players)

GW is scared of girls. Why do you think they have so much trouble sculpting attractive female models? Because girls have cooties and the staff at GW don't like looking at them for too long because it makes them feel funny in their naughty place.

Classic 1ksons.

You seem to also pile up some groups by just main color, though they are not quite the same...

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

In Warp Transit to next battlefield location, Destination Unknown

the Black Legion has the best paint scheme, in my humble opinion.

Cowards will be shot! Survivors will be shot again!

Pre-Heresy World Eaters. White and Blue trim with gore splattered on it is a very menacing sort of look.

Outer Space, Apparently

I like the Chosen of Nemeroth from the Space Marine video game. Problem is, they're pretty non-descript - I thought they were Black Legion the first time I saw them

I use an "Hakanor's Reavers" scheme, I think that one was only depicted in the old CSM codex. It's black with iron linings and molten lava cracks on the black background.

My armies:
Eldar
Necron
Chaos Space Marines
Grey Knights
Imperial Knights
Death Guard

If I were to paint a CSM army to my tastes, I would probably go with Night Lords: I quite like the deep, dark blue and the lightning theme, every single marine is unique - in a sense...

Spoiler:

I prefer my own warband, the Glacier Serpents.

White really helps show the dirt and blood on the armour.

Blue and Gold is cool... but you know what's even cooler is the paint scheme that's so secret it's not even on this list.

Good ol XX blue and greens

Death Guard is probably my favorite color scheme, although Emperor's Children are a close second.

Red and Gold. It'sthe classic scheme for me. I used to rush to the displays when I was younger, its what was being displayed. It just feels classy to me.
