Had a quick bout at playing this a few nights ago. Had a lot of fun playing it again. I got it off GOG (I think) because I couldnt get my old copy to work on windows 8.

Had one of the best games as it was me (scylons the brain people) Vs the reptile guys once all the other worlds had fallen.

Our huge forces built up near one system as the arms race began. Spent a good few hours simply building ships as all my planets had become utopias.

I finally declared war and the battle lasted for ages even on speed up fight. Huge doomsday weapons and hundreds of torpedoes and small craft headed to their targets. PD weapons and shields got overwhelmed on all sides.

I cooked dinner, came back and it was still going.

Best game I had on that for a while.

Anybody else play this game still?

Its a bit basic in some ways, but its a lot of fun.

Not currently, but it will always have a special place in my heart. Oh, those many, many hours "wasted" away to that calm, relaxing music (I can hear it in my head right now just by imagining the galaxy screen) ... how, just how could they mess up the sequel so badly. :(
Oh, right, someone felt a need to push their own artistic vision on it ...

Anyways, MoO2 is great, and the version currently available from GOG is both cheap as well as reliable. Species customisation is fun, as is designing your own starships. Building dedicated carriers and boarding craft, planetkillers loaded to the brim with virus bombs, allrounder patrol ships, ... that game was great to get your imagination flowing.

I agree completely.

Its also great for multiplayer too.

Me and 4 mates would play it together and have a blast.

It was also great fun assimilating all the species after you captured them. I usually create one planet at least which acts as a "zoo" and I put all the captured races on there to admire as my empire grows.

Orion 2 is probably one of the best games ever made. I used to play it all the time with my cousins over the holidays. Nothing beats the custom races though. Creative Unification with either +2 production bonus or telepathy or whatever it's called. If I had the time I'd download it right now, damn. Great memories!

My secret fortress at the base of the volcano!

I love that game, but I had a super huge hate-on for two races: the Nazin (shapeshifters) and the Psilons (genius research dudes). The Nazin always steal every tech development, no matter how many spies I have on defense. One Nazin spy with an overall +55% spy bonus can somehow outfox fifteen of my own spies who have a 50% spy bonus. Every turn the spanker stole something. And I can't declare war, because they also stole tech I don't have from everybody else on the map, too. So if I fight them, I'll be facing my own tech, plus everynody else's.

And the Psilons are nice and peaceful, until they reach a tech level where they realize they outclass everyone with weapons tech, at which point they go on a genocidal campaign across the whole galaxy. I have trouble beating a race that literally has *every* tech development, two turns before anyone else does. Asshats.

Whenever I play I use the tech exploit to give me every tech on turn 1, which revelas the whole map and shows all the other races. If one of them are Nazin or Psilon, I /ragequit and start a new game, repeating the process until I have a map without either of those unbalanced OP douchecrackers. Then I load a save from before using the techsploit and play the match normally.

I still get curb stomped half the time, but at least I manage to get a colony or two, first.

Emperor's Eagles (undergoing Chapter reorganization)
Caledonian 95th (undergoing regimental reorganization)
Thousands Sons (undergoing Warband re--- wait, are any of my 40K armies playable?)

Curb stomping in the Eye of Terror!

I wasted so many hours on that game...

Endless Space is very comparable to MoO2.

I dont find the Nazin that bad, but the Psilons either suck terribly in my experience or absolutely smash.

I tried endless space, and it was perfect EXCEPT for the space battles and ship designs. I think master of Orion wins in that department.

It annoys me really bad that the klakan (ant people) dont have subterranean as their skill, So I generally go for that one when I make my own race of Ant people.

Fantastic game, played tons and tons of it. Always played as the Psilons so I could get lazers and deathstars galore. Good times!

I'll rain on your enjoyment a little. I hated MOO when I got around to playing it. It's not that it is a bad game it's just that other better games have been made and I played them first. I still find galactic civilizations 2 to be the best space x4 game.

I liked that game as well, I think. Thats the one where you design ships etc a bit more indepth than the ship design in MOO2?

But remember Galactic Civilizations came out in 2006 while Orion came out in 1996 so a huge difference is to be expected.

MOO and MOO2 are quite a bit different. The latter has smaller fleet sizes, sim-city on a planet playstyles, etc... The former tends more toward massive fleets (though you're only allowed six active designs), spending percentages for planets, etc...

I like the former a lot more than the latter, though I find both to be good games.

Never got to play one, told it was great and was told never to play three. Worth trying it out?

I have a really hard time giving a game a pass because it's old particularly when there are new games that exist in the same vein.

GC has more in depth customization then moo I believe, but it is one of the least in depth in the genre. If you want a game with really in depth ship building you want to look at space empires or star drive. (Disclaimer, I haven't played start drive I have only watched videos.)

I think it's at least worth taking a look at. Having said that, not everyone's going to like it as much as I do. And it'll almost certainly feel dated. For instance, the six ship classes thing that I mentioned appears to be a result of technical limitations.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Anyone (else) here who played Master of Orion 3.

Its very hard to get into, but some of those who bother to climb the learning curve rally get to enjoy it. Its one of those games that you will learn to appreciate, or just absolutely hate.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.

Because if you look at how much memory MOO2 takes up in comparison to Galactic Civilization the difference will be pretty big. A lot changes in 10 years, you cant compare doom to halo one etc, because one is far more limited by its time. If anything, you could say Galactic Civilisation was made with the experiences learned from MOO in mind. I mean its fine to hate a game, I hate many, just making sure that people realize that MOO is coming up to 20 years old soon, almost as old as I, and Galactic Civilisations will be reaching a decade old at the same time. A huge step forward is expected in 10 years.

Yea but it cant cost more than a few dollars, no reason not to give it much of a try really.

Hated it. Especially after playing it on the heels of MOO2. It was just... inexcusably bad.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.
