A Build-It-Yourself alternative to expensive foam cases, like Battlefoam. Easier and more convenient for the tournament environment. NOT for long distance travel, ie airplane travel. Can also be used for 40k, Warmachine, Malifaux, Historical, etc.

NIce twist on the classic magnetized bases and boxes.

However, I strongly recommend some heavy self-editing. There's no way this had to be a 20 minute video. It could have been 5 minute video or a couple page long blog post. I bounced around a couple of times to see what you did and it took me about 3 minutes to get the gist of it.

As you wish, fast forward is your friend. My experience is anything around or under 20 min is ideal. If you don't have that much time, zoom through at your leisure. I'm not in a rush.

Where do you get the thin metal sheets?

Most arts/crafts stores will sell magnetic sheet (Michaels for example). Make sure they are the kind that allow you to peal away the white part to the adhesive. If its not the kind with adhesive, you got the wrong one. When you peal away the adhesive, you need to line it up right as it will stick pretty strongly on the bottom of the tray. SO, I suggest measuring the interior of the tray, give yourself a good inch on each side, length and width, so you have some room. It doesn't have to be perfect, but you don't want it riding up the sides. Cut out the sizing once you measure what you want with an exacto knife or similar. They are thin enough for that. I wouldn't use scissors though.

I found sheet metal at menards for about $1/sq foot. Bring a magnet to the store with you and test the flat sheets in the ducting section. It is super easy to cut with a pair of tin snips that you can pick up for $6-7. I use rare earth magnets under the base and the same sheet metal for the movement trays I cut out of masonite and glue the metal down to.

I wouldn't use the magnets to attract to the magnetic sheet. That's asking for all kinds of problems. The way I do it is I magnetize the models, which are then put on metal move trays. Those are then attacted to the magnetic sheet that is stuck to the bottom of each tray bin. If you have metal move trays, you can just line up the units, and pluck them off the bins as needed. If you use magnets to connect just to the magnetic sheet, you have to make sure your entire army is magnetized just right, and the strength of the magnets attraction can be an issue.

That would keep them neat if your game requires movement trays, but it's also another step that I think most folks wouldn't necessarily need. My buddy just bases his figs on steel washers that stick to the magnetic sheet in his boxes. the magnetic sheet is similar to your method except he uses a certain size cardboard box that fits nicely into reusable shopping bags. He's got many hundreds of figs organized this way.

There are companies that sell metal bases as well in any size one would want. Here's one, but there are others.

At less than a mm thick, you could just glue them to the bottom of any typical GW base and no one would notice.

That'll work! I go the other way, but there's some models that just don't need or don't fit on any movement trays, like the huge monsters. I'll have to check out that site and get some of those for the models that need them for my method. I can see what you mean though. If its not whfb, you won't be using move trays.

Best,

Lowe's and Home Depot both sell thin sheets of metal. You can get that and some tin-snips and make any box ready for magnets.

And that is the story of how all my giant demons get carted around.
