I have been building a little arsenal of drop pods for a drop pod army using the vanilla marines codex. But recently after poking around my friends space wolf codex that SW grey hunters have everything normal tacs have except for heavy weapons and grav but get counter attack. So my question is, is SW better for Drop Pod armies or is it just apple and oranges in the end?

The fact that codex marines can combat squad out of the drop pod gives you more targets and OS units. Man for man, I suspect the grey hunters are going to do better, but think of the army overall.

C:SM also has sternguard, 5 man assault marine squads, and ironclads. While I’m sure the Wolves have some nice things, they are going to excel in slightly different situations.

SW have plenty of tricks for drop pod

First, you can bump up a unit 2 points a pop for a bonus CC weapon if you want to do some melee. This is a per model bases too.
Counter attack, as you mentioned.
Wolf guard with combi weapons
Dreadnoughts with a ++3 save on the front armor are AMAZING distractions if placed properly.
Dreadnoughts with helfrost can instantly kill artillery
Terminators can pod in as well.
Formation for 1 unit of wolf guard and 1 unit of TDA wolf guard that arrive at the same time (cant alpha strike) and are twin linked when they land (all of which who can have combi weapons)

gwarsh41 nailed a lot of the advantages on point.
- You get 2 special weapons per 10 men, instead of 1 special and one heavy
- You get extra options for the squad, like a power fist.

There are also some drawbacks.
- Counter assault is a poor trade for Chapter Tactics and Combat Squad.
- Wolves do not have access to telepathy.

There are some cool combinations you can with wolves.
Ulrick the slayer spaced carefully can give a big chunk of your army preferred enemy. If you run the numbers on preferred enemy, you will find that, on a BS4 model, its slightly better than being twin-linked when not snap-shotting. Given the lack of psychic dice to make this buff happen, its pretty sweet.

Space Wolves can lend out drop pods to other armies.

I'm currently fetishizing over drop purifiers.

Drop a 10 man purifier behind enemy lines turn 1.
Combat Squad
2 Cleansing flames
Run to reposition (Hell yes NSF)
4 Incinerator templates.

What infantry?

Ooh here's a thought for some allies for your pups:

Smash Fukker CM (tanks for TWC)
5x Scouts in LSS (excellent mobile objective grabber)
3x Grav Cents (drop pod fixes pretty much all of their woes)

That blog has a pretty nice all dreadnought list with a good number of pods for Space Wolves.
