You guys make the call on this one. I didn't make a big deal out of it last night in my game, but I think I was getting screwed.

So my unit of two obliterators are being shot at by a Chaos Dreadnought that went into fire frenzy. The dread was armed with two close combat weapons, one flamer, one combi-bolter and a havok launcher. The havok launcher was the only weapon in range and took it's two shots since it was in frenzy. Now this would equate to 4 blast templates. Now here is the tricky part. My opponent hits with all four templates, then says he also has 4 partial hits to go along with that. The obliterators are on 40mm bases and are spaced 2" apart. Now I don't see how he could ever get partials on that, but he looked like he was going to argue it so I let him have it (being the nice guy that I am). I don't see how he could get partials after he already hit them four times. Am I getting ripped?

Oh yeah and by the way, he hit with all four partials for a total of 8 hits and scored 6 wounds...I failed 2. Lousy rolling on my part.

Look at pg. 30 of the BGB, under the heading Blast Weapons.

My first question is were you guys using a blast marker?  If so, why the argument?  Either it completely covered one Obliterator base and partially covered the other one or it didn't.  From the sound of your description, it sounds like it was a BS call, but any argument should have been avoided by the use of a blast marker.

Secondly, as a heads up, on the same page it has the rules for Multiple Blasts - each is resolved seperately.  So, the process should have been:

1) Roll to hit.

2) Place marker, if a hit was scored.

3) Determine actual number of hits due to full/partial coverage of the blast marker.

4) Roll to wound/saves.

5) Go back to step 1 for the next shot until there are no more blast markers coming from that unit.

If you were 2" apart i don't see any way in hell he could have gotten any partials.

Yeah, you were ripped. Just be careful the next time, its a common thing among players to rush through the blast template in small units. Whether intentioanl or not, you oponent would like to think it gets all those partials but without actually getting the template out and checking you really have no idea. Just do what any ood player does and blame GW for shafting the small template rules.

Was he arguing that he didn't have to center the template, but only place the hole over a part of the model's base?

There's a legitimate argument to be made for not centering blast templates on the base. The blast template rules just tell you to put the hold over a model's base without any centering requirement. The quick reference summary at the back of the book says to center it, but the precedent with GW is that if the summary and the main rules conflict, you refer to the main rule.

Still, even if you place the hole at the edge of an obliterator's base, there's no way to get a partial on the other if they're 2" apart.
