So it appears the tau are picking up the galaxy's super heavy bad habits...

http://natfka.blogspot.com.br/2014/10/warhammer-fest-report-new-releases-pics.html

It mentions non-flyer tau super-heavys on the way. Now I know the folks at Natfka aren't always reliable. But assuming they are which is it more likely to be. A super heavy skimmer or an oversized battlesuit ?

Any thoughts ?

Probably a skimmer... the Riptide is supposed to be the pinnacle of battlesuit tech currently. and it only came into being sometime after encountering the Imperium.

Well they COULD always just change the fluff, or maybe make it a unit of one of the other xenos races allied with the Tau.

If they were to resurrect their own background, Epic: Armageddon's Tau rules included a super-heavy called the 'Scorpionfish'.

Essentially, it's an up-armoured orca transport with the passenger bay replaced with many, many missile systems of varying calibres - SMS's, Missile Pods, Seeker Missiles, Tracer Missiles (something unique to epic - essentially a tomahawk-sized macroweapon version of the seeker missile).

But it's not a flyer so it won't be anything to do with the Orca.

Would have to say a Super Heavy Skimmer since as mentioned they did say the Riptide was the top of Suit Technology. However wouldn't surprise me if they didn't decide to create a "Titan" class suit after their encounters with the Imperium.

I'll give more credit and less salt to this news because they got it from a Q&A - so Forgeworld people DID say that.
One contender woud be the Swordfish - rules for it existed back in 2004 and in WD #36, a kitbash house-ruled version of it was shown as part of Dan's army in an apoc game.

You know... how the hell would the Tau even know what a swordfish is anyway... compared to everything else I just realized how inane it is that I complain about that compared to everything else in 40k, but I mean the Swordfish doesn't even look like the namesake at least all the others KINDA do.

ind enlighten thoes of us who do not know just what WAS the swordfish?
What did it DO, how it looked like.

As for other notes, I expect something along the lines of super-sized hammerhead if we get a skimmer.

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

They did in order to force the riptide into the book in the first place, so yeah, why not?

In any case, a super heavy skimmer would actually fit the fluff (if I'm not mistaken they're already supposed to have one), and in my opinion would be way more thematic and cool than the riptide and all its variants.

Except...they already encountered Imperial titans, which gave rise to the tigershark AX-1-0, mounted with railguns that were originally designed to blow holes in starships. And they were pretty damn effective apparently. But I guess since that's not a kit made by GW proper and the rules are in a book produced by FW then that might as well have never happened, since no mention of the tigershark AX-1-0 is ever made outside of IA3 again (and GW has a new $85 Gundam kit they desperately need to sell you 6 of, company's hurting bad these days you know).

The Imperial Knights are new to them, but seeing as how they're even smaller than the titans they've fought previously (assuming that we're not supposed to be ignoring that, as I said), they shouldn't be an issue. Not an issue serious enough to warrant the creation of a bigger battlesuit, which is not only impractical but goes against the Tau's philosophy on war; that any foe can be overcome with superior planning and tactics, no matter how large or numerous. Hammerhead squadrons should be able to deal with knights, and the only reason they can't is, again, because GW has a new $85 kit they want you to spam.

Supposedly the names for Tau vehicles are Imperial designations.

Also, if I remember right the "swordfish" is kinda like an up-sized hammerhead with two railguns.

The names presented for tau units are just imperial designations given because the imperium dosent know their actual names.
