A read of the BRB on formations didn't resolve this question in my head,

Do formations (as in, the kabalite raiding party) specify exactly which units must be selected, or are they only a minimum?
For example, the raiding party requires one ravager, if you wanted to burn the points on a second is it allowed? Could you take a voidraven?

Also w.r.t. the kabalite raiding party, it requires six warriors be taken. Can you upgrade these to trueborn? Now that it's a unit upgrade, the list includes the option from the codex. But, they stop being warriors and are no longer troops choices?

Formations specify exactly what units they contain.
Some may give a range, in which case you can purchase more - but if there's no range it's not a variable number.

Thanks. I assume Kabalite Warriors upgrade to trueborn still "count as" warriors, but the formation specifies "troops - 6 warriors", so I can see the argument running either direction.

If Trueborns do not have their own entry and are a sub-entry/upgrade of Kabalite warriors (Do not have codex) I would say it works.

Yeah you can upgrade Warriors to Trueborn. However I do have a question for you regarding the thinking that lead to your initial question. If the Formation was a minimum requirement what would be the maximum? Were you thinking you could just 100 Ravagers or any other units to the formation say 6 Voidravens? Given the formation lists no options other than the units in it where would you think the maximums came from if you believed they existed?

Yes, Trueborn now are "Kabalite Warriors".

Minor necro thread update (but still current)!

Just an FYI, I asked this question to a tournament organiser a couple of days ago as I wanted to run the formation in a tournament earlier next year.

After conferring with the other tournament ref's and a could of GT committee members I have been given the green light to use Trueborn as they are "still Kabalite Warriors".

Read into that as you wish but it seems tournaments are going to be okay with it (unless FAQ).

Just because one tournament allows it is no guarantee that any other will. It's nothing more than that tournament's 'house rules'.
