Soulstorm should work just fine as a standalone install, it does not, iirc, require an install of the original DoW to run.
Are you using the default installation or are you installing it to a sub-drive (like having your OS on the C drive and the E drive being application storage, for example). What OS are you attempting to install it on? (a 64bit OS should be more than capable of running a 32bit application).
The error message you're getting seems to suggest that it's looking for a different disc than what's installed. Check the game's CFG (should either be in the install directory or in your Documents folder, possibly under Soulstorm, or maybe Relic Entertainment or possibly THC, Im not at a computer that has it installed to verify.) In that file, it may have a line of code that will mention something about DRM or a security code or security check, or words to that effect. What you're looking for is where it is telling the application to check for the disc. If it says, for example, D:\ and your CD drive is H:\, then that could be a problem.
