I was thinking of picking up an old copy of the LoTR SBG to try it out. Are there any differences in the core rules in the editions from 2001 through the present day Hobbit versions?

I don't know if I'll be specifically playing LoTR with it, but I've heard good things about it and might want to use it as a generic fantasy skrimish system.

One or two, but they are pretty small. I think the Hardback 'one rulebook' is the definitive version but the older softback ones are mostly the same except they only contain stats for the characters from that particular film.

I would recommend avoiding the first Fellowship rulebook though as cavalry rules weren't brought in until The Two Towers.

If you are looking for a generic skirmish game the LOTR is very easy to adapt too most settings. I recommend it.

Thanks, that's just what I wanted to know. I'll keep an eye out for them at the next FLGS auction.

Found the Return of the King Rule book for silly-cheap money on AbeBooks and also picked up the other two movie books, The 2 Towers White Dwarf compilation, Siege of Gondor and Shadow and Flame books.

All together, they averaged about 5or 6 bucks each!

Even if I never play the game, I've now got a wealth of scenario ideas for my games of Song of Blades and Heroes and Of Gods and Mortals.
