I've been a life long fantasy fan in general, and a warhammer fantasy player since 97, so my experience with 40k is not that extensive. my experience as far has been a few games back in 3rd edition with a borrowed IG army. I have now come to realize that if I want to get in any gaming I will have to start a 40k army, as that is the most popular game system by far in my area. no one at this time plays fantasy or has a fantasy army at the local store I go to. what to do? stop playing wargames, or adapt? I have decided to start a 40k army, I just got the rule book and now comes the hard choice of choosing an army.

looking at a space marine army but I am open to advice for or against, but I know I don't I like tyrinids, I like space marines for the low model count to make a playable army that can actually win. so what do you guys think?

Read about the various armies on Lexicanum. It is important that you pick one that you like the lore of.

Regular space marines are quite fun. They're pretty beginner-friendly and have a lot of options. Chapter tactics can make for some thematic armies and if you make your own chapter, you can just use whichever tactic you feel like - which adds to the variety of your force.

If you like the space marine look and lore and you're a fan of low model count armies, you might want to look into grey knights. They're a pretty elite army of space marines with a unique look and a big psychic theme going on.

Well, what did you play in fantasy? Do you want the 40k equivalent of that army, or something else? What are you looking for in a 40k army?

If you want an army with low model count, then go for GK.
Cheap Terminators as troops, lots of magic dice, Purifiers with cleansing flame, and the tough to beat Nemesis Knights.

Go read a bunch of the lore on Lexicanium. Play an army that speaks to you personally and that you find fun. A lot of people will tell you to play based on what strategy/style you want (Ranged vs. close combat) but I feel playing the army you find the most fun/who you identify the most with is most important.

I play Bretonnian knights for fantasy, which GW has forgotten about and it seems they left to die, and the few times I played 40k back in 3rd edition I liked playing the IG. but it was too big. it takes forever to move a horde army. a low model count that is fast to paint, looks good on the battlefield, and can function well once I learn the ins and out of the particular army is what I am looking for. the space marine army reminds me of a bretonnian army, it's an army of knights of various skills and specialties but still it's all knights. a marine army has different units with different functions but it is still all marines correct ? I know they have scouts that are not fully marines yet.

I like playing and modeling my army to the fluff, I am more of a "for fun" player than a competition or tournament player, the 2 armies that have grabbed my attention are space marines and orks fluff wise they most represent the 40k universe to me.

If you like Space Marines, but are looking for a more fantasy "feel", then maybe consider the Space Wolves? They're really just loads more fun for me to play than normal SMs as they have all the same shooting options, but aren't totally allergic to melee. Plus they have things others rune armies don't have (cavalry unit, scouts that don't stink, a cheap cannon fodder beast unit, a dedicated regular marine melee unit). They're the easiest (and cheapest) SM chapter to make look uniformly unique, as their basic squad box includes heads and bits for converting a box of scouts, Devastators, whatever infantry you want to the Space Viking equivalent.

Plus, instead of the special characters being "oh gosh it's super pumped up chapter master Anglo Saxon Squarejawfist!" They just get Loki, Thor and Odin.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"
