Why are rhinos and razorbacks separate kits? Why are any rhino- based kits separate? Wold it not be easier to sell one $45 kit with everything (Razorback, pred, vinicator, whirlwind, etc) in one box?

I went to Hershey Park in central PA this year, and I have to say I was more than a little disappointed. I fully expected the entire theme park to be make entirely of chocolate, but no. Here in America, we have "building codes," and some other nonsense about chocolate melting if don't store it someplace kept below room temperature.

Yes, it would be, except it would cost $90.

Be glad that GW hasn't seemed to figure out the pricing power of bundling on that particular model yet.

But why sell you one kit for $45 when they can sell you 5 at $40 a pop?

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

Because the razorback bits adds another sprue to the rhino box and GW sells the sprues for 20 bucks a pop. What would be nice would be if I could buy a rhino and then buy the extra sprue for the kits separately and magnetize my rhino chassis to be whatever I want it to be. I did that with my Predators.

Because GW is out of money if people can magnetize.

That's why assault termies and regular termies are separate.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

As others have said basically GW doesn't want to encourage anything other than buying more miniatures. Same reason why you don't get all the heavy weapon combinations in a Tactical Squad or a Devastator Squad, because the GW idea is that you'll have to buy both (or multiple Devastator boxes) if you want that.

Anything to push more product.

Doesn't the Razorback kit also include the Rhino bits though? I seem to always remember that used to be the suggestion, never buy a Rhino always buy a Razorback because it gave you both for the same price. Of course that was a decade ago so it likely has changed.

Because GW needs to execute MAXIMUM GOUGING for some reason.

Peregrine - If you like the army buy it, and don't worry about what one random person on the internet thinks.

Because... uhh... some people may fall for it and buy the Rhino kit? I dunno. Just buy the Razorback and enjoy one of the most easily swapped between transports in 40k. There is almost no modelling skill required to make the two things interchangeable.
