I'm thinking about trying to make a skink only army. Is that sort of thing viable, or at least fun? I like the skinks the best, on account of they're adorable, and I also like the idea of making an army that's pretty much all underdog.

Hmmm it depends what you mean by ALL skinks?
You could run a few big blocks of Skinks with Tetto'Eko (he is a skink lol) and then couple groups of skink skirmishers. Then you could run some monsters since they mostly have skink riders (Like the stegadon or ripperdactyls or salamnders even have skink handlers)

most skink armies have a combination of the below
Skink skirmishers
Skrox Units
Krox units
Terradons or the other type
salamanders
stegadons
bastiladons etc
so you can go all out monster mash, or lots of skirmishes or go for a conventional arry with rank &file, some skirmishers and some monsters - they are really versatile and actually quite effective as an army

Ok, so now I'm thinking no flying dudes, mainly rank and file type skinks, with a couple big monsters, just because i want to try to build and paint some of those beasts.

This is very do able as there are lots of options that use them. However remember that the Skinks have only one Lord level character (including unnamed characters) and that is Tehenhauin who is pretty expensive for a Skink but pretty good, especially if you are going against Skaven and/or using large amounts of Jungle Swarms.

Really? That's a bit disappointing. I've never liked using named characters.
The good news is that my lizardman army book should be arriving today, so I can finally start planning this out myself.

Well you can still use tetto'eko which is named but he is awesome. And you can use skink priests but I geuss there isn't many others

My big problem with named heroes is that it takes away from the feeling that this is my army. I like to come up with my own color schemes, backstories and fluff and other stuff like that, and it never feels right to have a leader that already has their own backstory.
It's not the biggest deal in the world, more of a minor annoyance, really.

just rename the character - even if they are named you can say you are using them as xxx but doesn't mean you have to play as that character

Excellent point!
Another question: In the box of skinks, they have directions it seems for skinks with javelins, and skinks with blowpipes. Are there any other arrangements possible in the set?

I've flirted with this idea for a while now too. Just love the idea of big skrox units, look pretty intimidating. In the box you can also make them with swords and shield, swords are more like spiked clubs. Got a sneaky feeling there might be new kroxigors coming out too.

Lots of skirmishers, a skrox block or 2, ripperdactyles, flying skink chiefs, tetto, tenehuin or whatever his name is with a bunch of jungle swarms. Should be a super fast and fun army. A good bit of magic (lvl3 beasts plus loremaster of heavens right off the cuff), and surprisingly hard hitting, though seriously lacking in durability.

I just won a tournament on sunday with an all skink list, so i feel kinda qualified to comment
I know special characters can be a bit of a drag, but in the case of an all skink army, it really, really helps quite a lot.
Tehenhauin in particular is excellent for a skink army for two reasons: he's a level 3 caster (the highest level skink), and he has a leadership of 8 - generic skink characters are 5 or 6.
What you should do is fill your core with a combination of Skink/Kroxigor units and skink skirmisher units, and then load up on monsters in special and rare to provide a lot of the combat punch.
Stegadons are excellent when on the charge (Ancient Stegadons for preference) for dealing with enemy monsters and monstrous cavalry, and Salamanders provide a good answer to the problem of massed infantry. Your skirmishers and skrox units have enough short-ranged shooting to clear away small chaff units. Your focus should be on surrounding the enemy and hitting them from multiple sides - your strength is in speed and numbers, not in hitting or staying power.
Mounted chiefs are excellent characters to have - 2-3 of them on Terradons or Ripperdactyls for dealing with war machines or hitting the enemy in the flank makes for an excellent choice, especially backed up with Beast magic.

Thank you for that information, Micky! It's quite a lot to take in, but very helpful.
It's going to be a while before I have anything near an army. I'm mainly working on putting together and painting my skinks regiment right now, and for some crazy reason I also decided to get into High Elves. But everyone here's been very helpful.
Those stegadons look like a lot of fun to put together and paint, I think. I'm looking at it with envious eyes.
