Guys

What is the best list to write a competitive army list where I have:

At least one squad of combat-oriented terminators
A Landraider Redeemer
and some power armour space marines

I have started painting some beautiful Deathwing, and a similarly good Landraider, and I love the look and feel of the Dark Angels.

However, I bought the codex and after struggling for a few days and reading lots of interweb posts I can't find a list that includes the above and is particularly worth doing. Maybe I just can't write lists?? Most of the wisdom around suggests either Ravenwing or sit back and shoot... I'm up for some Ravenwing but then where do the tactical guys go?

Anyway, I thought about using a different codex but don't want to go and buy another one to find the same issue. Thoughts??

A Deathwing Land-Raider-Rush can be pretty brutal, especially if you have Belial and therefore get ObSec on your 14/14/14 re-roll damage result Metal Boxes! I'd say that, to the LR and DW squad you have, you want at least a squad of Deathwing Knights, with Belial in an Land Raider Crusader, and then fill out the army with units like Tacticals in Rhinos, Ravenwing with Special Weapons and maybe a Dread or two. It won't be storming a GT any time soon, but you should be able to take it down the FLGS and kick some behind!

Very nice paintwork, by the way!

I run Grey Knight Termnators, and they are at a minimum semi-competitive. With them you have the option for Paladins as well, so you can have souped-up Termies.

Anything deathwing does, GK does better.

If you want a serious termi army, you need to go GK.

If you want to stay DA, you need to realize deathwing are not self-sufficent, and require to work alongside the ravenwing and the "greenwing" in order to truly shine.

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

You could also look at building a Strikeforce ultra list fo Vanilla termies. SFU with Iron Hands is hard to kill. A full Ultra list is only about 1250 points so you will need to pair it with a something.

Though as BoomWolf says it really does need a bit of support. Whirlwinds come to mind for horde control.

So, been reading other army write ups online, and the Grey Knights are probably the best choice but not really what I had in mind.

So back to Dark Angels and making it work for me.

My issue with the Land Raider rush is that for Azrael plus 5 termies and a land raider you're looking at 760 points. Are they gonna kill that much stuff?

I'm thinking of ravenwing squad(s) to support, then tactical marines and maybe Dakka preds... Hmm.

Firstly, you want Belial, not Azreal, so save some points there. It's still expensive, but look at what you get for that:

An AV14 all round vehicle with Objective Secured that re-rolls Explodes results, giving AP2 weapons only a 1/36 chance to Explode it. This basically gives you whatever objective you park it on.

A HQ unit that can DS with precision, meaning you don't need to use the Transport and can get exactly where you need to be. This gives a good amount of strategic versatility to the unit, as you can focus or split it as neccessary

A very tough unit of Termies that, for one target, will absolutely smoke anything you need it to.

So overall it's pretty solid and very versatile.

For the rest of the army, filling it out with cheaper units like Tactical Squads and Scouts would be the way to go to ensure you're not too low on models.
