I played a game this morning in which my Archon killed an IC with his huskblade. The character he killed had 3 wounds, but was instantly killed due to the huskblade. I contended that my archon would then become 3 strength stronger for causing 3 wounds to the character because of the soul trap. My opponent believed that I only did one wound, and the character was then removed as a casualty, only netting me 1 extra strength from the soul trap. Can I get a ruling on this?

I believe you will find the answer in the Instant Death Special Rule itself, but I have been far from the right mind for these sort of things so verify for yourself.
Does it state to remove the Model as a Casualty outright, or does it state to reduce the Wound Characteristic to 0?

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures.

For convenvience I have the rule, pg 165:

'Instant Death: If a model suffers an unsavedWound from an attack with this special rule, it is reduced to 0 Wounds and is removed as a casualty'.

@OP I find the Agoniser better, Poisoned weapons work better when you have a higher Strength.

So how many Wounds did it lose?

There are quite a few Wounds out there which can cause a Model to reduce the Wound Characteristic by more then 1. There are also other Rules which trigger if a number of Wounds are reduced from a Model, such as determining which side has 'won' any given Assault and which one will break and run. So without a full review, which I am trying so hard to keep away from of late while I deal with more pressing concerns, I don't see there being any grounds for 'the Model only lost a single Wound' when 3-1 does not equal 0.

Personally I don't know, but I would hazard a guess it only causes one wound and ID as a special rule reduces it to 0 so would only give +1 Strength. I am going to the GW store tomorrow so I can get an opinion there, as I do not currently have the DE Codex in my current location.

The model may be reduced to zero wounds, but that doesn't increase the number of wounds actually caused by the model.

Then what would the other cause be?

Just for something to ponder:
...only the Wounds actually suffered by enemy models count (including all of the Wounds lost by models that have suffered Instant Death).
- Determine Assault Result.

Not stating it is relevant, again I have not even looked at the Soul Trap because I am trying to take it light, but another Rule where the number of Wounds lost by Instant Death is 'all of them.'
Tiny bit curious but don't want to touch a book still: Does it say 'caused by' or 'suffered by?'
Game Workshop similarity in the Wounds and Wound characteristic is annoying, maybe who is the subject of the Rule will shed more light on the matter.
