I can't seem to find the rules stating that if the shots come from within the same terrain piece (or was it within 6"?) you don't get cover saves. I guess this is gone because area terrain doesn't really exist anymore. An opponent claimed cover from my barrage hitting him in ruins saying that "the rules state that models in ruins gain cover even when less than 25% obscured". The same would go for forests. So even though the direction of the shot came from the other side of the ruin, he still gets cover. Is this really the case?

Ruins still basically count as area terrain for infantry though not for vehicles.

If the model is wholly within the bounderies of a ruin it gets a ruins cover save.

The only other area terrain we are told exists in the BRB is craters.

For any other piece of terrain you must be 25% obscured.

Rubble gives you a 4+ without being obscured
TWISTED COPSE (Forest) gives you a 5+ without being obscured.

It entirely depends on the Datasheet for the terrain in question.

There are two ways for a Cover Save to be granted by Terrain, the first is if the Model is obscured behind the terrain by greater then 24% while the second is simply if the Model is in the boarder of the terrain. The individual terrain pieces, we need to stop grouping them together along the lines of 'area terrain or 'ruins,' will come with a Datasheet containing all the Rules needed to use that piece of Terrain. On this Datasheet will be the instructions telling us if the Model gains the save by being behind or in the Terrain in question, and that will answer your question.

Another thing I love to point out:
We have been empowered by The Rules to write our own Datasheets for Terrain, so go nuts.

OK, so the data sheets haven't been released. I just find it odd that you can claim cover if a shell exploded right on top of you in a ruin, or if two models in the same forest shot each other from 1" away.

They're found in Rulebook.

Quick question, if the center of the barrage lands inside the cover, does the attacked unit still get cover?

If squad 1 shoots squad 2 inside the same cover, does squad 2 get a cover save?

Yes to both.

Where is "wholly" contained in the rules? Far as I can tell "toe-in" is still a thing for Ruins and the like.

Helmann,
The Rules require there to be a Datasheet, so without one you can not use the Terrain in your game.

There is a number of Game Workshop Datasheets within the book itself, so feel free to apply those to the Terrain produced by Game Workshop at your leisure. If you do not like any of those Terrain Datasheets, they are a hollow version of their former selves, then you must create your own before the Game begins and use it. I highly recommend doing so for many Game Workshop produced pieces of terrain, I am fond of '6th Edition Ruins' or 'Planet-side Ruins' because they where far more functional then the 7th Edition version.

As for it not making sense:
Abstract Rule system, not everything will make sense.

Thanks Jinx, I think I get it now.

GW really could've made this a whole lot easier by just including all the rules, even just copy/pasting from 6th ed would be better than this mess. I can just tell how some of my opponents will react when I bring my own datasheets to a game, and the completely over the top reprisals I will get from their own datasheets. I've been trying to explain to them how blast templates now affect all "levels" of a ruin without much success (even though levels don't exist anymore), now that I will just write my datasheets for ruins to not have levels they're just gonna love that.

Helmann,
They don't even include a list of purchasable Fortifications in the Rulebook any more, those have to be found in a completely different book. It is far more likely they intend to either release a 'terrain book' that will be formatted like Strong-hold Assault, or that they only ever intend to release individual Datasheets through the likes of White Dwalf or some other 'pay to own' method of deployment. Honestly, the very least they can do is include the Datasheet with the Model itself.

I do have to wonder though;
How long till we make our own Terrain Datasheets with a purchase cost?
