If you take the Coven suppliment as an ally detachment how many hq choices is mandatory and how many can you use?

You cannot take an "Ally" detachment from the coven book since you cannot take troop units. The Ally detachment requires at least one. You can take a CAD or CC detachment however.

I have not looked at this supplement but I bet it follows the format of 7th Edition supplements:

It isn't an Ally as said above. It's a... Covenite Coterie Detachment... Weird words so I'm going to call it a CCD.

The CCD is 2 HQ and 2 Elite mandatory with optional of an additional 4 HQ, 6 Elite and 6 Heavy Support but it goes on to restrict the units in the CCD to a specific list. Basically the units you would expect, but you can't throw in an Archon or a Ravager. Only the units supplied on their list.

There is a passage about ONLY the CCD and Formations being allowed to use the special Power From Pain table and the Artifacts presented in the Supplement. So no other Detachment options are allowed.

Whats to stop you from taking the CCD detachement as a 2nd Detachement?

Nothing. It could be your 3rd, or 4th, or 10th. There is,however, one primary, but that is onlyt decided when you pick your warlord.
