Going back to October 2013 what are your personal favourite/most used publications by GW, BL or FW? And why?

I found it a hard task to nail it down to 5. A few HH books may have been included but I'm not 100% sure of their dates of release.
There have been an extensive amount of codices, supplements and data slates released too. And faqs. As well as a whole new rule set.

So here is my top 5 in no particular order:

1.) 7th ed rulebook
Has to be up there as the most used for obvious reasons. I also like the way that maelstrom missions have brought a refreshing move back to tactical gameplay rather than just shoot the feth out of each other then move onto objectives late game. Also little changes such as to the jink rules have brought more tactical decisions up. The psychic phase could have been done better but is still a nice touch to the rule set.

2.) Imperial Guard (AM) codex
Yes there were big downsides to the new release such as losing key characters and artillery pieces, but I personally feel as though it really captures the feel of the guard. It allows for good solid builds of different varieties, be they mech, infantry or a mix of both. Aside from a few units there is a good internal balance as well.

3.) IA:2 second edition
Correct me if this is older than a year. I LOVE this book. It has so many amazing units and great pieces of fluff. The artwork is excellent as well.

4.) FW update on the SM characters of the badab war second edition
This is a free download from FW which already earns it brownie points. I love building army lists, and there are so many varied characters that help so many builds that this update really spices things up. Even without Loth, Issodon and Shen this would still be in there.

5.) Inquisition dex
In my top 1. Just excellent. Can use this dex to cover any hole in any IoM army (aside from AA). Points wise the units are insanely cheap and the fluff is great. The only downside is the introduction of servo skulls. As 9pts just ruins the game.

Ones that narrowly missed out include: Cypher dataslate, Hellbrute dataslate, Codex Space Marines, Be'lakor dataslate, FW 2nd ed update on chapter tactics and Imperial knights WD article (wins out over a codex 10 times its price). Orks codex may have been considered if they hadn't removed the artwork - but the new layout it brings is fantastic in my eyes.

So what's your top 5?

On moon miranda.

I wasn't a fan at all of the new IG book.

A big nerf to mechanization (that the core rules already pounded into the ground) with costs increases on on several vehicles (and a general nerf on the Chimera), a big nerf to AA utility (poor Hydra), many major longstanding issues remained unresolved (crappy pricing on heavy weapons units and hellhounds, Heavy still not working quite right on Ordnance Leman Russ tanks) or ineptly handled (Stormtroopers got renamed and reduced in cost but also reduced in capabilities and their core problems of the gun just being too weak and too short ranged remain, Ogryns got some changes but not enough to make them useful, etc).

It did get some kinda cool stuff, don't get me wrong, IG got some new orders, some cheaper Leman Russ tanks and sentinels, and a new under-costed infantry killer artillery piece along with some psyker options (that promptly became superfluous 6 weeks later) and a new transport (that was unasked for and superfluous right out the gate), but overall I personally wouldn't rank it as a great release.

To top it all off, now we've got an awful sounding new name stuck to this army, and a side-faction book that reads like Harry Potter torture porn (the Militarum Tempestus book).

Also not a fan of the new codex layouts from Orks-onwards.

Personally, my top releases are:

IA13 - I made a thread on this a day or two ago, so for a major overview check that, but this adds a whole lot of stuff to CSM's and Daemons, and a great Traitor IG army list. Probably one of the highest value FW books out there along with IA12 (which has *two* army lists)

IA12 - a little more than a year old, but I'll include it anyway. Two army lists, one for Necrons with a more melee orientation, and a DKoK grenadier centered army that I'd been hoping to see forever, as well as some Space Marine additions. Has some of the best art ever put out, and tons of game content.

IA2 rerelease - great book with lots of cool stuff and great art.

Horus Heresy Extermination - boatloads of fluff, awesome art, tons of game content. Even though I don't have any intention of playing an HH army any time soon, I still love these books. Also, AdMech!

Imperial Knights - there's a lot of controversy over these, and the book obviously is rather thin, but I find with them to be a necessary hardcounter to lots of things which otherwise don't have a reasonable response, plus I do like the models (even if I find their price to be absurd).

Obviously there's a pattern here with me

IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT.

New Heavy Gear Log! Also...Grey Knights!
The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

The only one I liked out of the 4 books I have from this period is the Dataslate for assassins. It brought back marbo style conversion possibilities. I know I made a cool assassin because of it.

Nothing else has inspired me in this period though from GW.

I cant wait to start converting the other ones in that dataslate.

Didnt like the AM book at all, the 7th edition was ok I guess.

1. Pariah, by Dan Abnett. End of list. The past year has been a let down for me.

7-th ed was a relief and much needed. 6-th screwed the game up significantly. Now all we need is a remake of BA and older 6-th ed codexes and it's gona be the best thing happening to WH40k in a while.

^This.

A fairly poor year all round thus far, and it isn't looking to get better anytime soon.

Donn't like anything they made this years. But two things are hate the most. The IG codex, because it is not the army I want to play and to make it playable I more or less would have to spend cash equal to the cost of another army and the GK, because while one dimensional, maybe even boring, it does one thing super well, kill IG list.

IA3 2ED is my 1st place for sure.
Being tau and all, that's hardly an accoplishment though.

IA13 was also amazing.

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

Krieg! What a hole...

The Scion 'dex, turns out that after spending 40$ on a squad of Kasrkins, I had a 2nd army that play completely differently from my main this whole time.

Completely forgot about the assassins dataslate. That may get into the top 5.
IA:13 is the one im looking forward to most.
The reason I like the AM codex is due to the fact it all seems balanced. Apart from Pask and wyverns, there are no solo stand out units. The army has to work in conjunction with itself and some really neat combos can be made. Don't get me wrong - for many IG players I can understand why there were aspects that were a let down, but I just like the 'feel' of the dex.
May have to check out Pariah.

Anything from Forgeworld would be at the top for me, and anything from GW would be at the bottom. I just can't get excited for anything from GW anymore, but Forgeworld still has the magic.
