Im starting up a Space Marine army on Bikes soon, and I will have a spartan themed army so they will mainly be red and bronze/gold.
Im having trouble on what bases to use, Im split between a "urban" setting with roads, its cool but maybe not in tune with the theme of my army. The other is like a Temple setting, its more in line with the theme but maybe not as fun?

I cant decide on what colors to use that will look good together with the color of the army, white? green? I need help here people!

(sorry I have no picture of the marines yet as I have to decide on the basing before I start painting.

Thanks!

Well, it's hard to tell without a painted model, but an important thing to keep in mind is color contrast.
You obviously want your model to pop - so make your base a color that stands out. Nothing drastic, but still enough variance to tell base from model.

That said, there's some exception to this, based on theme. A good example would be Death Korps of Krieg models. Typically, they are painted up as worn and dirty, so basing them in some sort of trench scenario where they "blend" into the base works.

For your Spartan themed SM's, I'd go with a sand colored base, since red/bronze/gold play well off of that color. So between the two scenarios you've presented (urban and temple), I'd go with temple. It may not be "fun", but that's something that can be fixed with some imagination. Throw some random bit on there that turns into a cool detail and tells a story about your base. Conversely, maybe less is more, and you let the models do the talking.

Also, ask yourself the question: when people think of Spartans, do they think of urban rubble or a sandy colored temple? How do you want the models to be seen?

Looking forward to seeing what you decide. I'm a huge fan of basing, largely because basing is the one true "blank slate" we get in painting and modeling. The only limit is your imagination.

I'd go with your armies theme, after all if you want a themed army that goes for the whole model including the bases, you can still go for things like ancient beat up causeways, dirt paths leading through the temples, stone bridgeways. The modern concept of an urban road still has parallels in ancient temple building communities so you could have a road of ancient broken up tiles or bricks. Dirt coming through the cracks or weeds having managed to break up through the mosiacs being crushed under wheel.

It really comes down to color contrast. You can really paint an Urban environement in a number of colors to make your mini work. As mentioned, you want the base to contrast a little. Maybe better to say that the base should compliment the final mini. Don't go crazy and make the base look completely different, but find a balance between color choices so the base compliments the colors your final mini uses without spoiling the overall look.

What is best in life? To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women. Grrr.
