I'm just not sure if she will be able to make her points back. I mainly took her to deal with Tau that camps in backfield (broadsides and fire warriors), and ranged squads from other factions (inquisition with digital monkeys, devastators, etc).
My concern is without support, is she just going to get overwatched to death and do absolutely nothing? If so, I feel like for her points I can just plop another Leman Russ on the table.
What is your guys experience with assassins (the melee type). Do they actually make it in to combat, and kill their points worth?

I doubt that it will be great use of her.
She's best at eliminating super-units before they get to do their thing.
Assassins will ironically, selmon actually win their points back.
The main gain of them, is that they force your opponent's hard to play accordingly, else they will create a massacre, and as such assassins are best used in a list that takes advantage of this forced gameplay.
can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.
I have only deployed vindecare, which by the way, are amazing and almost always win back their points. As far as melee assassins go, especially if you are using the callidus, it is best to use them to occupy and harass your opponents. They may not kill their points back, but forcing your opponent to deal with her and not something else on the board is valuable.
The Emperor Protects
Strike Force Voulge led by Lord Inquisitor Severus Vaul: 7000 points painted
I tend to use them as threats rather than actually getting there points back.
The cluxus especially has put fear in my local N DP Breakdance group as keeping em near a big blob or something spiky forces him to think twice
While the Vindcare lets me pop out special weapons that might cause me trouble. Though mine has the issue of missing 4 consecutive shots since iv fielded him in multiple games. (frickin seriously 2+ 4+ and i still failed :()
The Cali i still needa figure out but im liking her coming in from reserves vs infiltrating as it gives me some time to see where she is needed.
The Ever is the only one i cant really find a ok use for.
Vindi: snipe heavy weapons, or put wounds on MC Callidus: ultimate back line distruptor
Callexus: Just run this guy down the gullet (opponents is BS1/WS1 when targetting)
Everescor: imo, the trickiest assassin... needs to be out of LOS to "creep" up to the enemy, or used as your backline defender.
1) the best "all comers" assassin is the Vindicare, he will always have a target to shoot at, is relatively easy to hide (or keep out of danger) and has ammo for all sorts of targets, all of which ignores cover.
2) the Callidus and Culexus are definitely "purpose-built" for a specific enemy and are best used if you know what to expect of your local meta. The Culexus will shutdown any psychic deathstar while the Calidus is an awesome counter to reserve-heavy armies (Necron air forces, pods, etc...) and has the potential for a strong alpha strike.
3) the Eversor is the toughest to use, he's only happy in CC and it will be very difficult to get him there without getting shredded first. You could use him as back line defense but it seems like a waste of points to me.
My culexus has always done it's points justice. I played a game against dark angels a few weeks ago and my opponent brought Ezekiel who was attached to a unit of Deathwing knights. I snuck him up close, shut down Ezekiel, shot with stolen warp charges and 3 I added from my pool. That killed 3 of the knights. Then charged him in close combat in which he killed (it took 3 turns to do) Both Ezekiel and the other 2 DW knights. Think about how many points that is for both Ezekiel and the knights and not to mention he completely shut down Ezekiel all turns but the first during the psychic phase.
However I have a tournament coming up and I'm not sure if I'm going to bring him. There's a lot of armies that he will still do well against but won't be hitting his full potential against (tau, necrons and others with no psychic powers).
