The rules for Boon of Mutation currently state that a single friendly character within 2" may roll on the Chaos Boon table.
It currently says nothing about friendly Chaos Space Marine non-vehicle units or anything like that.

The Helfist Pack is a formation of 5 Helbrutes, one with Vehicle(Character).
What happens to it if I:
-Roll +1 toughness.
-Give it an armor save.
-Give it +1 wound?

Etc?

We have a characteristic which is unknown, so adding or subtracting from it simply leaves a number which is still unknown. While unusual, it is not alone in this phenomenon and doesn't really break anything as there are so few Rules which interact in this fashion. The very likely outcome of these Boons would it be sitting on the vehicle doing nothing throughout the rest of the game. For example, there are a number of things which can Wound a Vehicle in this game but X-1=Y doesn't trigger Removing as a Casualty and it is unlikely there will be anything else on the Vehicle which will trigger when it suffers a Wound.

While that Helbrute is a character it doesn't gain the Champion of Chaos rule so doesn't roll on the boon table for killing characters and doesn't have to challenge everything.

Just like how the daemon prince doesn't have champion of chaos either.

Boon of mutation is a psychic power in the tzeentch discipline. It hits a friendly character within 2" with a S4AP- hit and if he survives he gets to roll on the table.

You cannot cast Boon of mutation on a Helbrute because Helbrutes don't have the 'Character' special rule. It is a Vehicle(walker).

Things like Aspiring champions have 'Infantry (Character)' as their unit type and it is these models that are eligible targets for the psychic power.

The formation mentioned in the OP gives a Helbrute the character tag. As explained in the OP.

For sanity's sake, I'll assume the *character* on a chariot is hit, and not the chariot.

Well the rule is poorly worded as the scenario about vehicle characters was impossible during the writing of the psychic power. But HIWPI is just look at where the psyker is and decide the facing from him.

As for the chariot, the character riding it can decide if the hit goes against him or the chariot I believe.
