After a 20 year hiatus from my Blood Angels, I have decided to start painting them again. I have gone for a fairly deep red color on them, and I am quite pleased for my first attempt.

I started on a tactical squad with plasma weapons. I would love some constructive feedback on those since I'm planning on painting more of these guys

Nice work!

I'd say your next step should be towards using washes to really bring out the details; these guys would look great if you hit them with some Agrax Earthshade.

I'm no expert but i'm pretty sure you've nailed the OSL...

Now just a wash on the armour and a quick highlight and you're good to go! ;-)

Need more 's in my life!

Nice! Can you tell us which colours you used in each step (inc primer colour) please?
Only negative in the sergeant's eyes. I've given up on do the whites & irises (although I once managed to do both irises & pupils on the original Felix model!) & now just make them dark brown or black.
Eg on this guy I just did a black wash to the eye sockets over the pale flesh tone (not trying to hijack your thread btw):

(he's not finished).

Congratulations & can't wait to see more.

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

I have to agree with you here. When I light them up from the side to take photos, they look very flat in colour. A wash in the recesses will probably be helpful here.

Thanks! I used a lot of time to prepare for the OSL, and was gak scared to ruining my paintjob when I actually put it on

Also agree with you that the armour needs more definition.

Yes, eyes is a bitch. I will probably try to put a black dot inside his eyes, but I'm a little afraid to make him look slowed when i do

For the armour I used the following colors (using an airbrush, and all colors are Vallejo Model Air) :

Primed using 5:3 Brownred primer/Black primer
Then Brownred primer at a around 60 degrees angle.
Then Fire red at a approx 30 degrees angle.
Then Scarlet red just from the top down.

I think I should have kept the Fire red and Scarlet layers at an even tighter angle than I did this time to make the contrast better on the armour. I'll definetly try that next time.

The OSL looks really awesome. My only criticism is that the armour looks slightly mono-tone.

Looks like a great though, keep up the good work.

Nice job.

They're solid, everything's within the lines, but you really need some shading in the recesses and , if you feel up to it, some edge higlights.

The eye lenses and OSL suggest you can push yourself to do better.

As others have said, a wash to 'black line' the recesses of the armour would do wonders on these - I would suggest Nuln Oil thinned 1:1 with Lahman Medium (the medium will ensure it doesn't darken or stain the red too much. Agrax will make the red look muddy.

Then one or two edge highlights on the upper areas (personally I use Vallejo 130 Amarantha Red for this.

Also as others have said, the plasma OSL is superb!

Please look some posts back. I have given the entire range of paints I use for the red color there.

Wow, nice job for a first bunch! Especially the OSL. You've done it well, and I applaud you for trying it on your first attempt.

Going to echo what the guys above have said, try a wash. If you dont thin it down appropriately, it'll probably stain the red, so a brushed on layer of red might be necessary after the wash. Alternatively, you could thin the wash right down and use a super pointy brush and only apply the wash in the crevices.

Additionally, I think some spot details will help break up the red. The wash will help, but some decals / markings on the shoulder pads would work wonders.

They look clean and nice.

Something to note here is that the OSL is way too bright for your deep reds. IMO, the OSL draws too much attention to itself.

A way you can remedy that is to add shadows and highlights to those reds. Truthfully, the reds look a little flat right now.

But yeah, the OSL effects are top notch, well done!

Before going back and finishing up the tactical squad according to the comments, I have finished my Furioso Librarian. I'm much more pleased on the shades of red on this guy than the tacticals.

Very nice highlights here on the red. You probably can do a similar touch up on the Tacticals. I really like the Force weapon too--great technique there. The base, too, is excellent and really enhances the model.

That is beautiful work man.

I just hate those two little metal round things over his head. WTF are those anyway?

My five death company guys are done. All with bolt pistol and chainsword, except for one guy that are armed with a power sword. Still using the camera on my Samsung phone, so the images are quite poor unfortunately:
