Emperor's finest! I was wondering if, on the tabletop, space marines can truly overcome any threat? Now, I know that if you were to face 14 broadsides you may be able to destroy them with 4 Thunderhawks but let's keep it at around the same point value. Thoughts?

Generally, yes. The Space Marines have an extensive toolbox, and can deal with pretty much anything. The issue comes with did you take the right unit in your list? Because we don’t get stuff for cheep. But if someone posted a list, and you tailored to take them out, I’ve give you good odds of doing it, or at least putting up a good fight.

I'm assuming you mean countering weird unbound cheese lists... in which case, yes. They have enough variety that they can list-tailor against anything. There are a few crazy forgeworld/escalation lists that I could imagine that they would struggle against, but it would merely be a tough matchup (not impossible).

Yeah, if anyone could list tailor to any possible list, it would probably be vanilla SM.

Why would they have to tailor their list? Just bring a CentStar and you win. Kaboom.

Wait a second, I thought that people hated Tau because they could counter any army and any list, but you guys can do it too! Double standard much?

Yes, they have tools, chapter tactics and allied marines to take in nearly every type you face.

Sgt. Vanden - OOC Hey, that was your doing. I didn't choose to fly in the "Dongerprise'.

FudgeDumper - It could be that you are just so uncomfortable with the idea of your chapters primarch having his way with a docile tyranid spore cyst, that you must deny they have any feelings at all.

The point being that Space Marines have the tools to build a proper list with units that should be able to go toe to toe with a list it is supposed to counter, where Tau have upgrades for their units that literally change their role to whatever you want, and can be taken on one model or unit to make it able to do whatever - Fliers? Skyfire and Interceptor! Melee? Hit and Run and Overwatch at BS 2! Anti-tank? Free Cover Save! On top of that, Markerlights can make up for anything the enemy can thrown in your face as well - More accurate fire that can ignore Cover and are able to call down Krak Missiles for nothing can down everything, where any other army has to work to down even a single unit in a turn, as it should be.

Tau don't need to build a list - They just need to have Markerlights and an assortment of upgrades and they can take on anything. Others, and especially Marines who lack a singular strength need to think about how their list works.

I started out a Tau player, and I'm selling them for that bs.

Marines can fight most lists, but the difference between them and Tau or Eldar is they do it by matching the opponent, not by crushing them utterly while giving them no chance of survival.

A Marine army can present an even match for almost any army. A Tau or Eldar list can, much more easily and readily, obliterate any non Tau/Eldar list.

That being said, even if you tailor a list, Marines will struggle to engage Eldar and Daemons. Their chief advantages, armour saves and decent small arms, mean absolutely nothing to armies which ignore 3+ on almost every unit, have significantly better mobility and whose durability stems from readily available invulnerable/extremely high cover saves which Marines lack both the volume of fire or plentifuly ignores cover to neutralize. I have managed to bloody Eldar players, but I haven't beat one with Marines since their update, and with a 500 point advantage, I still get tabled by Daemons (We did some testing in my club in to that particular match up). That being said, I don't exactly tailor every last facet of my army, but with a pretty generalist, assault oriented Marine list, I feel confident fighting *almost* any codex or army.

Therefore, I conclude, Valve should announce Half Life 2: Episode 3.
