So I purchased the older starter set, and I've finally run out of the sand that comes inside. Is there a similar granular-quality brand out there? I've tried several different kinds of sand, but they're so different that the bases I create with them stick out like a sore thumb.

Woodland Scenics. They have giant bottles that will last you forever, and you can choose different colors and sizes of sand (medium, coarse or fine ballast), as well as color and premix. For instance, you can get all brown, or light + dark brown.

Also: at big plant shops, you can buy bags of colored sand for super duper cheap (I bought a $3 for a sack of black that I'll never be able to use up for modelling). You may not find the granularity you want, though.
