So with the release of the Tyranid drop pods, anyone else thinking of using Pyrovores or a Haruspex? I feel that now that they can get where they need to go, they could be a huge threat, especially in addition to a Trygon Prime and a Mawloc coming up with them. Deep Striking 3 Heavy Flamers, as well as a regenerating CC MC with Armorbane? Sounds good to me.

It sure does sound Scary as feth but didn't they have access to it last edition? i though pyrovores was fairly bad choice even back when they had spore pods. edit: Im saying i forgot why they where bad before and is it any different now.

I will admit I didn't play using the Tyranid 5th edition book, but I can't see why they would be bad. I can see the Pyrovore being kind of a lackluster unit, especially walking across the board. But DSing them in could be deadly, especially with Deathleaper or a Lictor to guide them.

3 T4 wounds with a 4+ save and a Heavy Flamer for 40 points. That needs Synapse babysitting or it can't fire over half the time. It lost its run and fire ability. It's mediocre in CC (I2, A2, WS3) with a CC biomorph that sacrifices all attacks for a single S5 AP2 attack.

I just don't see how it's good at any time. If 3 Heavy Flamers scares you, it shouldn't (unless you're Fire Warriors or IG infantry).
Let's go with 4 hits apiece (best case scenario really). 12 hits, S5 v T4 so 8 wounds, 3+ save is 3ish models dead. Does that sound like a great investment for nearly 200 points?

Certainly not the most optimal unit, but I think DS them would create a nice area of denial against most infantry, or even a gunline buster against some of the less mobile lists.

I did spore them in, in the previous codex and they worked pretty well without synapse, but I haven't used them since the update. I wouldn't bring them to a tournament, but I could certainly see using them in a casual setting.

Well, people who play tournaments only bring Dakka Flyrants anyway, I don't consider tourney lists to actually be "lists".

Either way, I think it could be fun.

Really, the question for any units you want to pod in is, "Why wasn't I taking these before? Was it simply because they were too slow, but otherwise a significant threat?" If the answer to that is "Yes!" then pods will help them.

If the answer is, "Meh... they weren't worthless but they weren't good either." pods won't help them at all. And Pyrovore/Haruspex are in this column at best.

The problem with Haru is that it always dies before it reaches its target. That problem is solved. Now your opponent has 1 turn to kill it before it charges. Put adrenal glands on it and it is swinging at S8 with armorbane. It still has crap WS, but its pseudo-regen, pseudo-Furioso abilities make it hard to tarpit. I am going to give it a go, as I have a fully painted model that I don't get much use out of. It may still suck, but what the heck, why not?

Pyrovores, idk.

Also, slap Regen on the Haru, and get lucky with a flying Hive Tyrant with Catalyst, he will take a beating and live.

Haruspex may see some more usage as a heavy Vehicle killer with the Pods.

Not the best anti-heavy amour, that goes to Stonecrushers who are cheaper. But then, Haruspexes are more durable and take up an Elite slot instead of Heavy Support

Oh, and as amusing as the idea of putting pyro's in them, I am looking forward to running tervigons in them, and popping out babies when they land. Certainly make my opponent food...erm give them food for thought.

That's pretty expensive, and seems kind of unnecessary when the Haru already has the ability to regen a wound every time it deals at least 1 unsaved wound in combat. I think the Haru should be kept as cheap as possible if you're running this strategy with the Drop Pod, as it is still not that hard to kill it in a single turn of shooting. But, if it comes in turn 2 and forces your opponent to shoot at a 160 point Haru instead of a 240 point Flyrant, I think it's done its job.

Catalyst, on the other hand, sounds legit, and probably a good idea if you have a Flyrant upfield (which you very well may).

Tervigon with e-grubs and crushing claws also sounds really nice.

Would be a bit more reliable than Outflanking him, that's for sure.
