So I wanted to get blood splattered across the armor of my Chaos lord. I thought I could just thin down 'Blood for the blood god' and shake my brush hard enough.
However, I am unable to shake so much as a drop of paint from my brush. How do you make a splatter effect?

You'll want to thin the paint rather a lot, but other than that you're pretty much on the right lines. Also, flicking the wet loaded brush with some stiff card (pulling upwards so it flicks downwards onto the mini) works as well.

One way i have found that makes a great wet look is to mix gloss/ardcoat into your paint.

Ok so I just took a big blob of paint on a old/bad brush and peeled the hairs back and released. Result was quite satisfactory.

And watch in horror as the contents of your hobby desk is scattered to the four corners of the earth, or at least the room!

People are forgetting to mention you need a stiff bristle brush as well. Works loads better. Just drag your thumb across the bristles and you're gold.
A toothbrush would work rather well for this.

Wait for someone to injure themselves and ask them to bleed on your model for you.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Citadel Blood for the Blood God.
On the official video, around 2:30, Duncan demonstrates how to do blood spray.

It is super easy, and unlike having someone else bleed on your model for you, you get little droplets instead of big gigantic ones that don't even dry red

Put some paint on a tooth-brush and drag your finger across the brissels so it sprays little drops. It works well for mud too.
