I've been debating on this issue for some time now in deciding which HQs I want to take in my squads. To me, the specific characters (EX: Mad Doc Grotsnik) see to only fill a niche and not much else. I'd like some input from the community on your thoughts over the following, discussing which HQ is better in which circumstances:
Warboss in Mega Armor vs Ghazghkull
Warboss on bike vs Zhadsnark
Warboss in Eavy Armor vs Grukk Face-Rippa
Painboy vs Mad Doc Grotsnik
Painboy or Big Mek vs Kaptin Badrukk
Big Mek vs Mek Boss Buzzgob
Big Mek or Warboss on bike vs Boss Zagstruk
If I missed any, feel free to comment and discuss!

Grukk Face-Rippa is a beast. Not only does he have a great warlord trait, he has base FNP, and a shredding PK.
Compared to a normal Warboss with the same loadout he is only 10 points more for those impressive perks.

For a biker army Zhadsnark is better since he can bring warbikers as troops, gives Skilled Rider and strikes at initiative. А Normal Biker Warboss is only better if you want the Lucky Stikk or the Blitzbike.
Grukk is superior to a normal Warboss in every way, exept that he can't reroll armour saves because he can't take the Stikk. Bellowing Tyrant is a must for any footsloging army.
A Megaboss can't be compared to Ghaz, since they occupie different slots, but I think a Megaboss could outperform Ghaz (because of the *again* Lucky Stick).
Comparing a Painboy to Grotsnik isn't quiet right, since Grotsnik buffs small units like Nobs or Meganobs with FNP, Rampage and Fearless, and the Painboy exists to buff large units of Boyz and Bikers. Grotsnik is a combat-orrientated HQ, the Painboy - a support-orientated.

Is Zhadsnark legal? Has he been updated?

Most cases I'd say generic is better. Really the only cases where I see named HQ's being worth it would be for making bikers troops with Zhadsnark or making a nasty deathstar of MANz with mad dok. There's probably others too based on preference, but those are the ones that stick out to me.
Also, for the MANz deathstar I usually throw in a mega-boss with da stikk too, so you can have a potential 37 pk attacks (assuming no killsaws) with 8 of them re-rolling! Overkill everything like-a-boss.

Ghazzy could work really well WITH a DLS Warboss... With the tanking / EW they are a good combo...

Then throw in mad dok for fnp and rampage and your good to go! Automatically Appended Next Post: Great now all I want to do is run that combo.

You don't compare Grotsnik to a painboy; you compare Grotsnick to a painboy + warboss. He's basically both HQ rolled into one (with the added perk of fearless AND rampage if it comes to that). He is probably, like his counter-parts, best buried in a big mob of boyz due to the fact that Ork units aren't that hard to stop if you really want to.

The problem with Grotsnik is that he's a bit of an overkill in most cases. By no means he's bad, however. I see him more like a sidegrade. Nice 3-d HQ for a horde detachment. Warboss + Painboss go in one squad, Grotsnik goes in another. Stick meks to eat challenges and you're golden.

If Zhadsnark is legal, having ork bikes that don't really care about jink would be pretty good. They're cheap and as durable as white scar bikes if they jink and flat out. Ignores cover would murder them though
