Hi all, I recently went into my local games workshop and started having a look around. One of the employees went to me and started to chat with me. He offered a game of one squad vs one squad. I played and won. Now I'm thinking of starting an army of my own. Here is where the problem lies. This is a list of problems I have and I would love some feedback:
1. WHAT ARMY!!! (I'm thinking Orks)
2. Costs will be factored in
3. If orks wat tribe
4. What rules must I learn
5. I not good at painting
6. I have a friend who wants to start as well and he's thinking tyranids
Plz leave tims for me, It will help a lot!!!

1. Orks are a nice army to play, but its down to personal preference. theres no specific BEST army, but there are ones that don't work on their own. (inquistion or tempestus)
2. again, tribe is down to personal preference. it really depends what army time you want to play: E.G. evil sunz are god for speed freeks
3. all of the rules for your army, and the stuff in the rulebook
4. doesnt matter if you're bad at painting.
5. totally get your friend involved
Welcome to 40k!!!!

1. I love Orks. Swarm armies can be pricey, but you can do the mek route
2. Swarm armies are pricier
3. Bad Moons! more teef
4. read the rule book a couple times.
5. You don't have to be good at painting. Primer the models with spray and slap some green on that skin!
6. I also started with Nids. Swarm is expensive, but they have a great range of models now.
Welcome

Army is of course your choice, I'd recommend figuring out which factions are available then searching up all those "tribute" videos on youtube, whichever army's artwork takes your fancy might be a good one to do further research on. (In other words, it's a lot more fun when you can really get into your chosen army's lore and art styling.)
Costs to be factored in, just remember that alongside the models you are going to need glue, paint, brushes, and thinner.
If you chose Orks, THE RED ONES GO FASTER!
Rules; Get your hands on a rulebook, read it through in it's entirety. Anything that isn't clear to you either talk to people you know who play Warhammer 40k for their thoughts, or check out these forums (lots of topics here specifically for certain rules.) Also when you finally play your first game of 40k, try to plan it out purely as a "lets learn this" game, it'll take a few rounds before you start remembernig things automatically without having to refer to the rules constantly.
Painting, learn as you go. Some youtube tutorials can help with learning some methods. But overall try to enjoy the process, and paint up your units in a fashion that appeals to you.
and yes it is great to have a friend that wants to get into it, it's easier to learn the game with a friend rather than a stranger.
From one noob to another, best of luck!

You say Fiery Crash! I say Dynamic Entry!
*Increases Game Point Limit by 100*: Tau get two Crisis Suits and a Firewarrior. Imperial Guard get two infantry companies, artillery support, and APCs. |

Do what army feels right for you. If your first want is Orks, then do Orks, if you get something different chances are you will turn around and buy Orks someday anyway. (This is what happened to me, just with Eldar instead of Orks.)
Orks will have lots of boys unless you do a speed freak army. Paint dem truks RED!!!
Read fluff. I like the Snakebites so I made my own Ork tribe who were kicked out of the Snakebite clan. (My Orks are lead by a Big Mech, Snakebites don't like machines.)
As others have said, read the rules book and read your army book.
Not being good at painting are what Orks are made for . IMO. Buy some Army Painter green spray paint and some washes. Also stop by the painting and modeling section on Dakka, it is FULL of good tips.
Bring your friend down with you next time and let him get a test game in, if he hasn't already. Having a friend start an army with you is always a great start. Build, paint and fight against each other until you learn about the game.
Someone else will have to give you tips on good models and list for Orks and Tyranids in 7th ed however. I still mostly play 5th edition.

Neoman, let me tell you something I found out after already investing in the hobby:
Pick the army that looks the most visually appealing to you. Forget tactics and army composition. Throw out everything that has to do with rules and gameplay. You should wait to focus on those until after you start. What you need to pick is whatever army looks the most attractive to you, because you're going to have to clip, file, glue them together, spray them, paint them, and base them. And that is not going to work if you're just doing it to round out your army. You need to feel an attraction to your own models or else you'll just put it off or treat it as a chore. This is a game second, and a hobby first. Remember that and you'll have a much easier time.
P.S. Fluff counts as "looks" as far as my point goes.

If you're just starting out I'd get the Dark Vengence boxset as it has two armies you and your firiend could have a few games with, it comes with the rule book and simple to follow guide for getting a game going made for newcomers to the game. It is what I started off on in 6th edition and it was a great way to get the 40k ball rolling.

Welcome to the hhhobby!
Play an army with high points cost per miniature so you won't have to paint that many models.

Even before you choose what army... you really should head to the game store and see how they play. You'll have the most fun with an army that both matches your personal aesthetic and play-style.
For example, some armies are very much in-your-face and need to be played that way. Orks, Nids, Khorne-based chaos are examples of those armies. You can play them against style, but they work better played in style. Other armies are stand back and shoot... IG/AM and Tau come to mind. Once again, they can be played in other ways, but they do better as designed. Most other armies fall somewhere in between those two sets of extremes.
Second, I'll mention the aesthetics again. You want to paint up an army that you like the look of. If you like clean lines, don't paint up a Nurgle-based army and stick to Tau, Eldar, or Necron.
Finally, I'll recommend visiting a game store when they are playing 40k. You'll see both how armies look, and how they play. People are pretty willing to help new players along, and may even let you borrow their army for a game or so.
