I think we have all maybe seen a thread that went on far too long. It seems like eventually every thread will end in flames if if goes on long enough, so what if we had options to put caps on a thread. Timed caps, or post caps, maybe giving the thread maker the ability to shut down their own thread when it's lived past it's time? What do people think of this idea? Smart, silly? Do you see any big problems with it?

One issue I see is, what prevents a person from continuing a flame war in a new thread once the original thread times out?
FYI - if you see a series of posts you consider a to be a flame war, please use the mod alert button to let the staff know and we will look into it.

It could be abused though. If any user purposefully opens a thread to provoke people and then closes the thread right in the discussion, then he's given power he should not be given. I don't see the necessity for such a change right now, I usually PM a mod about it if a thread is close to become a massive flame war (or report via the yellow triangle of wisdom).
