Subject: First Painting attempt: Tyranid Gaunt... The short is help needed!!

Hey Guys!
Had my first attempt at painting Tyranids last night! Been building myself upto it over the last few months and finally took the plunge.
First off: Let me say how much fun I had! I was literally shaking with adrenaline! Sounds odd i am sure but i have built up to this moment for months trying to find the time to set aside a few hours straight and have spent the moments over this time thinking about what scheme, watched as many tutorials as i could, been slowly gathering all that i required, and finally last night ... release...
I felt it only right considering the amount of inspiration, guidance and ideas i gathered from this site that i share my creation with all of you... Wether you thank me or not for this is another matter.
Secondly: Let me manage your expectations, i have not painted miniatures before and to be honest i have not really done much 'arty things' before, you would very much call me un-cultured. But still, here I am on my journey of discovery... and my first discovery is I have alot to learn .....
Lastly: Please comment with any advice, thoughts, ideas, criticisms that you have. I very much am open to anything and will look to apply this learning to my next painting opportunity.
Thank you, please enjoy:

Welcome to Dakka!
That is a great first attempt, the scheme is really cool and you've got good brush control from the start! If you've had fun doing this and produced something like that, then I say mission accomplished!
Going forward, I'm not sure what to suggest, as that looks great for a rank and file trooper! Knock out a few squads like that and you're off to a great start!

Yeah, I agree with Paradigm. Good looking color scheme. It looks drastically better than my first painted model! (which was also a gaunt!) Good job.

A few things. Thin your paints down as you start off using a medium, and take the time to really try a variety of paint schemes on your gants before committing to one scheme for your entire army. I went through quite a few before I settled on mine. Other than that, enjoy your painting!

Yes, awesome start! They are fantastic little troops Good work on the base too, you should cover the slot.
If you want to make pop more, I would increase the contrast -- darken the recesses a tinge, and on the edge of the ridges, give it one more highlight with something like Pallid Wych or White Scar. Because the photo is desaturated a little it's possible that there already is a lot of contrast, though.

I'd say you've done a really good job.
My only piece of advise is for you to never forget that gou can go back and add a shade or highlite any time you like.
I don't feel that your models need it, but often when I'm painting I'll see the results of my first paint session and go 'you know what, they look pretty ordinary' and realise that MANY gamers leave it at that... they don't go the next step.
They clearly have the brush skills as doing block painting can require a lot of skill, but they don't go the next step. They can shade a bit, or highlite a bit and make a WORLD of difference.
I think your stuff is great, so what I'm saying is as your skills improve, don't forget that you can go back and improve on your already good start.

I REALLY like the Color Scheme here.
I have never been a fan of the garish Tyranid colors used in some of the models I have seen.
These remind me of the actual alien xenomorph (although he/she/it/they would be an inverse of these - the feeling of the scheme comes through strongly).
I can't wait to see more of them.
Makes me think I should get some Tyranids to go with my few Tau models.

I'm already seeing drastic improvements from gaunt #1 to gaunt #2 (at least, the second that you've shown us - if there weren't any others between those two, your growth rate is staggering!). Even the photography has improved, in both clarity and orientation.

I really like that color scheme, it looks great! My only worry is that the colors may be too similar to the bases.I think a grey, gritty, drybrushed base would create a nice contrast and make the colors of the creature stand out (Perhaps with some green grass tufts or plants)
But again, it looks great!

Some very good painting so far.
I think the next thing to look at/improve would be adding colour. I don't mean paint it a hideous bright colour but some subtle colour will help as currently the only thing is the lack of points of interest. It might be a case of picking a colour you want to use along with the cream and black scheme and then thinning it down lots and adding a few layers to tint (not cover!) some parts. Red would be a big contrast and give some warmth or a blue would keep the overall theme cool.
Keep up the great work though!
