Subject: Choosing a 30k Legion

Troubled By Non-Compliant Worlds
|
30k legions have semed to be popping up at my gaming club more and more. While at first I didn't mind it too much but now I am in love with the forgeworld legions. I love how everything is designed for big, action packed senarios that involve a mass of models and sub battles to be fought all over the place. Anyways, I don't know what legion I really want to do, while I am started with the Horus Heresy books, I want to play one that reflects my playstyle. I find myself loving big games with tons of models on the board every which way and having an ARMY to control. Not 10 grey knights, not 3 or 4 metal boxes and especially not a little nest of tau fire warriors and marker lights . My first army and the one that got me into the hobby was orks plain and simple. This was back with there old codex, so spamming boys was very easy and successful. I loved to have semingly hundreds (more like 60-100 for the point sizes I played at) to throw and have under my command as 'warboss'. The fluff was stunning to me with having such a vast horde to freight train straight to the opponent and just literally run right through them. Basically what I'm trying to say is I like to have lots of models and usually a combat doctrine of either lots of vehicles or infantry that can still pack punch and when my opponent looks at them, he should think 'holy crap these are not some little ultrasmurfs'. I have thought about doing Iron warriors or Imperial fists because of their siege craft fluffy lore and how they use armoured assaults or even mass charges from space marines to take positions or really take advantage of a broken line or weak spot. But other than that, what kind of tactics, fluff-wise and chapter tactic wise, of other legions reflect what I'm going for? Any advice would be awesome!

If you want massed infantry waves, then the Death Guard, Word Bearers and World Eaters are big on that sort of thing.
Iron Warriors are big on attritional expenditure of manpower, too, and will happily throw entire battalions of astartes up the battlefield to overwhelm a defensive point (supported by ridiculous numbers of artillery pieces, of course).

Iron hands basically have a free +1 toughness buff for shooting purposes armywide. Not that the majority of ranged 30k weapons cares about toughness.
I've seen a game of 30k. Iron hands with a bunch of plazma cannons, this s6 long-ranged gunz that generate additional shots on wounds, artillery and tanks vs a horde of nightlords with apothecaries, infiltrating special guyz with fear, skimmers and deepstriking termies. The game was over turn 2 with 1 dead iron hand and a wipeout of the night lords before termies managed to arrive. That was brutal.
Forgeworld stuff tends to favor big gunz.

Also consider maybe taking a Legion that could work with your other armies, for example what I am doing. I am planning on building a 30k Raven Guard Drop Pod army and at the same time utilizing those same Drop Pods to help build my themed ODST Elysian Drop Troop army. Also I can use both my Elysians and Raven Guard in Imperial Armor Volume #8 when it comes out as they both fought together!

You can field a massive force of infantry if you put your mind to it. It's not unreasonable to have a full infantry company - 100 marines - in a 1500 point army and still have a decent number of upgades like apothecaries or wargear.
Suggestions:
Artificer Armour for sergeants. Look out sir! is good, but not having to worry about taking the odd hit makes a big difference. Meltabombs are good too, because you're likely to come up against a lot of vehicles which are immune to krak grenades.

Aren't Emperor's Children of fielding plenty of models? I thought that they are all about mass infantry.

I am working on my second 30k army. I went troop and fast assault heavy with my Night Lord force and can field roughly 5000 points with them including the primarch. I field them in the traditional shock and awe strategy of the Astartes and have almost everyone in drop pods, gunships, jump packs, or infiltrating. Its a very busy first couple of turns typically and is a blast to have that many guys on the field at once.
My second army I made because I was tired of painting midnight blue and lightning bolts and decided I had a lot of heavy vehicles I wasn't using. So to minimize troops I went with a Pride of the Legion Rite of War with a couple squads of terminators and lots of heavy tanks,(Spartans, Glaive, Land Raiders, Caestus). Still haven't figured out what legion I want to do but I am leaning either Alpha Legion or Iron Hands.
My quick run down on Legions and what I like or dislike about them(ignoring the primarchs):
Night Lords: Space batman, coolest paint scheme in 30k, and its got Sevetar the challenge beat stick who coined the term "Death to the False Emperor!"
Alpha Legion: Great special rules, good paint scheme(depending how you do it), coolest special character in the game IMO(Exodus). Ok special unit of Head Hunters.
Iron Hands: Great special rules on infantry. Blah characters, Paint scheme is difficult to pull off and look attractive.
Raven Guard: OK special rules, cool special characters including my #2 fave, the moritat guy. Cool custom Storm Eagle and scout squad. Another hard to pull off paint scheme. If I didn't already have a drop pod army in my Night Lords, this would be a no brainer choice for me.
Death Guard: Solid but over done. Paint scheme is pretty basic.
Sons of Horus: Cool paint scheme, kind of bleh special rules. OK special characters but nothing special aside from names.
Emperors Children: OK paint scheme, ok special rules, cool but not outstanding units.
Iron Warriors: Boring paint scheme, cool special units, and cool special characters. Rules don't jump out at me as being very special. I really like that one of the commanders for an entire grand battalion is a loyalist.
Imperial Fists: Blindingly bad paint scheme. Apparently good special rules(I cant get past the scheme). Special units are not very special at the brief glance.
Koooaei- The guns you are referring to are Volkite Culverins, very nasty weapons. Str 6, AP4 Heavy 4 with a very good range. Deflagrate causes one additional hit at the same strength as the original weapon to another member of the target squad. Really nasty to have even a 5 or 6 man squad sitting in the backfield with an Augery Scanner on the sergeant. My squad has ended many deep striking squads plans in their tracks and even racked up a couple dreadnoughts.

If you dont short hand your list, Im not reading it.
Example: Assault Intercessors- x5 -Thunder hammer and plasma pistol on sgt.
or Assault Terminators 3xTH/SS, 2xLCs
For the love of God, GW, get rid of reroll mechanics. ALL OF THEM! |

Where can you find information regarding 30k tactics and army lists? I know dakkadakka has them every once and a while but would like to know more about them also and some lists.
