hi guys, we have a bit of a rules debate going on here so id appreciate a little help

say for example mortarion charges in alone and challenges angron, can angrons unit also hit mortarion as he is alone, as I cant find anything in the challenge rules that stops the "who can fight" part of combat, but can only see the "can only allocate wounds" part of challenges, help would be lovely

Assuming you are going by 40K 7th Ed standard rules here (and not some form of "Forgworld Challenge Rules"):

When a lone Character is in close combat with a Character and attached Unit, both Character and Unit may allocate Hits to the enemy Character.

The enemy Character may only allocate blows to the Character in the challenge, with Wounds over-spilling if they do...

It's "Outside Forces" combined with the way the Assault rules work.

In your example, Angrons unit attacks the enemy unit (which comprises of just Mortarion). Wounds are then allocated to the unit, ignoring the model in a challenge (unless there are no other enemies, in which case they can be allocated to the model in the challenge).

when you have a situation where 1 character on one side is alone, in a challenge with another character, who still has a squad left,

that squad can in fact, hit the character in the challenge.

basically, once either character is dead, wounds spill over onto the other dudes in combat.

once all the other dudes in combat are dead, wounds spill over into the characters in the challenge.

I had a guy swear up and down that his single Necron Lord could keep assaulting my boyz squads and only be swung at by the single Nob because it was the first round. I kept saying that it made no sense that everyone else in the squad would just sit there like idiots.

In 6th they would just stand around and cheer, Rule wise it gave re-rolls depending on the number of watchers....
