Wanting to get a mate some Chaos Spawn for Christmas, can can he use them in his Nurgle army?

Also I am assuming he can use a warp smith, as they are Chaos's Techmarines?
Thanks in advance.

Is the Faction of the army Deamon or Chaos?

I am assuming Chaos, as you mention terminators, and in that case there will be no issue with the Spawn or Warp-Smiths as they are Units within the Chaos Space Marine Codex.

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures.

Yes, both the Warpsmith and Chaos Spawn are units from Codex: Chaos Space Marines.

One piece of advise before you purchase:
Head over to the Tactic section and ask if your friend will find much use for these models, maybe some pointers on how they can be used so you can more easily decide if they fit your friends playing style.

Nurgle spawn can be pretty good in a CSM list. The only problem in buying them as a gift is that I find it's best to use a full unit of 5 in a game, and GW only sell them in packs of 2. For £25 a pop IIRC.

I found this also, but there will be plenty of bits to kit bash some more spawn and add some randomness to other models. I'd be happy with spawn as a gift.

Mates don't buy mates warpsmiths... so bad... be a mate and get him a nurgle biker lord with a power fist instead! (works better with the spawn too)

Warpsmiths aren't that bad. In the right list they work fine. They might not be tournament stuff, but I regularly field one in my Daemon Engine list and it has yet to disappoint me.

Buuuuut: get him Spawns, those are useful in any CSM army, and be it for exchanging your models that rolled bad on the Chaos Boon table.

A Nurgle Biker Lord would be nice, but he would have to build it himself since there is no official model so far, to my knowledge.

BS5 model manning the guns behind an ADL is no joke either. Spawn are great, don't get me wrong, but most CSM lists lack long-ranged firepower.

Yeah I was mostly exadgerating, they aren't that bad. Although ADL has to snapfire at ground targets now since it has skyfire (change in 7th edition).

The things I don't know about 7th edition, I could probably write a book about. And call it 8th.

So the ADL has a quad gun and a lascannon. Do both of them have skyfire?

If so, wondering if there's some other defensive point that exists where the warpsmith can be dropped and just shoot things with a big gun. To me, it's great he can repair forgefiends, but he's always one melta shot from being too late.

Both have this Rule, I don't like it as I think one should be an Anti-Tank weapon while the other Anti-Air.

Both have Skyfire. It was just that in 6ed, since they both also have Interceptor, they could still fire at full BS.

Fortress of Redemption is good as he could man the giant missile silo.

Well this looks like the pace to ask this...
What size Bases do Spawn use, it looks like a 40mm, but I wanted to make sure.

Rule wise:
The base supplied with it is the only base you are authorized to use.

Most players will allow, or even demand, the Model be re-based to... I believe 40 is the current standard?

Yes I know that, just inherited some base-less ones and I wanted to put them on the right bases.

That is an interesting side thought:
Does the Requirement to use the base supplied extend to Models purchased second hand, as they are being supplied without a base?

From a quick review online, leaning towards 40 mm being the default.
