Here are a few of my recent cake toppers. While most of the cake toppers I do are zombie survivors, there's still plenty of room for other realms of geekdom.

In this case, here are several that are based on favorite videogames.

(Actually, the spartan in blue was a cosplayer who often wears that outfit to conventions as well).

The cake toppers usually start life as normal cake toppers- I cut them up with a dremel tool and re-sculpt everything that needs changing. Saves a lot of time as opposed to sculpting anatomy (which means I don't have to charge both and arm and leg for these).

In the case of the spartans, I started out with Halo action figures (they're the right scale, and have a lot of detail). I alter them quite a bit still (they need to stop looking like action figures, for one). But that's where they come from.
