OK. I think the consensus will be clear, I just don't want it to be:
From Codex: Tau
2 HQs were chosen: Farsight and AunVa. Farsight chooses his big bodyguard squad. Can Farsight with the retinue attach to AunVa? Keep in mind that AunVa is NOT an Independent Character (oddly enough).
So, can I?
Wait, don't answer yet. I want to sit under a big, oak tree on a hill at sunset with my list one more time before it dies.

I won't say no as requested, but you could put Shadowsun in there instead, not quite the invuln save = AP but you would get 2+ cover save in terrain

Presumably this would work with the super-special buddies from the Farsight Enclaves suppliment? As they're all IC's?

I think he wants Aun'va to join Farsights 8 bodyguards which can't be done, although one of them could join Aun'Va's squad

Take two Detachments - 1 Tau (CAD or AD), 1 Farsight Enclave (CAD). Take Farsight in the Farsight detachment, make him your Warlord. Take the rest of the Eight. Take Aun'Va in the Tau detachment. Have every single member of the Eight join Aun'Va, with O'Vesa joining last.
Of course this will not be possible until 1750 points (minimum with no upgrades on the mandatory troops). At higher point levels you can start upgrading.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

If selected from the Codex: Tau the only option available is the "Body-Guard" Unit....
These Models lack the Independent Character Special Rule, so they can not join other Units with their Commander.

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures. |

If so then happyjew's solution is a pretty elegant one. If not then sadly I fear aun va isn't in the cards. Which is kinda sad because he is the only thing I know of in 40k that can have a 100 percent fail safe ironclad save. Ap 1 wound = a save. Also for the points he a decent buffing unit, however his unit sucks Dec 5th and he gives up extra vps for dying and a compatent opponent will just shoot Bolters at him and his friends until they die.

Epartalis, I think you meant to say
"If so then happyjew's solution is a pretty expensive one."
Farsight, Aun'Va, and the Eight comes out to just over 1500 points. Not including the monetary cost of the models.

6+ save? Almost every model has a 3+, with a few at 2+ or 4+.

I was referring to Aun-Va's ability... Which was the only reason for him in the unit (unless I'm significantly misunderstanding what's going on)

This sounds like a horribly amazing idea! they wouldn't be able to deepstrike though i don't think as aun'va can't.

They'd still get their armor saves (2+ on bravestorm) and invulnerable saves (4++ on farsight, 3++ on shadowsun's shield drones) and cover saves (2+ if shadowsun's in the squad) and feel no pains on those who have it.
Have fun with that dawg

Just remember, that the Paradox is in addition to a saving throw, and, AP- bypass it entirely.

oh and it just makes a tough unit even tougher. AP 2 shots give an 2+ save instead of worse invulns or cover saves

It would have to be double CAD as TE and FE are the same faction so you can't take an AD of one if the other is your primary.

While that is correct ( RAW), I don't think it is intended. however, that is neither here nor there (nor anywhere).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't FE say they are Battle Brothers with TE and can ally with them?

They can. The problem is that is from 6th edition, when you could not ally with yourself. Unfortunately, Tau and FE are both Faction: Tau Empire and you cannot take an allied detachment of the same faction as your primary (outside SM and tournament rulings).

Nilok, That Rule is irrelevant to 7th Edition, as it grants permission to do something that we already have permission to do. The 7th Edition's Allied Rules, including the Matrix, contains instructions explaining how two Detachments with the same Faction relate to each other. Not only did 6th Edition lack these instructions, there was just an X where the two met on the Matrix, it also required the two codex's to have a certain Allied level or better before the two can be fielded in the same Army. As we had no way to determine the Allied status between a Primary Detachment of 'Tau' and an Allied Detachment of 'Tau,' for example, we are forbidden from proceeding past that point unless we had some additional Rules telling us how to resolve these situations. The rule you quoted was designed to fill that gap, providing us with the information needed to ensure we could successfully resolve such interactions.

Probable intent is everything. However the rule was written in 6th and relevant to 6th in 7th it simply gives permission that is already in the rulebook. They know this as illustrated by the FAQ for Space Marines which specifically changes an identical rule. Where as none of the Supplements from 6th received that FAQ. The intent is clear, the RaW is clear you can't have an AD as the same factions as your primary.
