So I have been wanting to start Blood Pact army for some time now, and I just recently got my hands on the Imperial Armour 13 book which has Renegades & Heretics rules.(a buddies, so I will have to give it back at some point) Up until now I have been using the Imperial guard codex to build my lists. Now I’m wondering which book should I use?

I have looked at the R&H rules and they seem fun and fluffy but not really all that competitive. The army I want is an elite mech force with grenadiers and tanks. This seems to be easier to build with the current IG codex. Currently the army is small (Command squad, 2 Veterans squads, 2 Leman Russes) and I want to make sure that R&H mech force is viable, before I go can buy an expensive book.

Khorne Daemonkin - 2100pts
Hive Fleet Cerberus 2500pts
Blood Pact Traitor Guard - 500pts

On moon miranda.

The R&H book can be very competitive, but primarily either very vehicle or very artillery heavy.

For Grenadiers and tanks, the R&H list can give you some interesting options, particularly being able to field "Grenadier" units with both two plasma guns and two Hotshot Volleyguns (giving you up to 8 S4 AP3 shots and four S7 AP2 shots from each unit on top of the remaining 4 Hotshot lasguns and pistol)

The R&H list will have wonkier leadership and be more akin to a DKoK Assault Brigade or mechanized Scions, but can be made to work ok. The big advantage is being able to do things like take cheaper Hellhounds or Wyverns by just leaving them at BS2 (where it won't really matter) or going full ham on T7 artillery units.

The IG codex however will be easier in general, just take carapace vets and throw them in chimeras and you don't have to worry about the wonky leadership or extra cost of Hotshot lasguns that won't do too much.

IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT.

New Heavy Gear Log! Also...Grey Knights!
The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

Instead of buying the book, why don't you take it to a copy center and photocopy the army list and rules. It would save you some money, then you can decide which army to pursue.
