So if I play a Rifleman Dreadnought or any other Dread without a DCCW, can I still assault? And if I do, how does that work? Rather than a DCCW attack, is it just a regular CCW attack at base strength?

It uses its base profile instead of one enhanced by the DCCW, otherwise it attacks as normal.

If a model has no defined melee weapon, it is assumed to have a 'free' Close Combat Weapon. It's in the Weapons section between the Shooting and Assault phase rules titled "No Specified Melee Weapon".

This is how most shooty-walkers (Eldar War Walkers, Imperial Guard Sentinels) attack in close combat.

Should note, it doesn't actually count as having a CCW for purposes of extra attacks or whatever in any way.

But yeah, free face-smashing boot kick. Just remember a Dread doesn't get auto AP or anything.

How would it, when it only applies to models that don't have any other melee weapons...?

....BECAUSE it has, at worst, a virtual Melee weapon, as without a weapon with the Melee type you cannot strike any blows. You also need an A stat, otherwise you cannot make any attacks at all.

And an Initiative stat, so you know when to attack. There's no initiative step 0
