I figured it's only 135 points for 5 jump pack Vanguard Veterans with 5 meltabombs, the same price as a suicide drop pod. Seems to me like a decent, well priced anti tank & monstrous creature unit, but I haven't seen anyone else comment on them being using for such a role. I was hoping to get some opinions on it from you guys as I'm thinking about running a squad with this loadout.

You usually only need 1 meltabomb to trash a vehicle, so a regular assault squad works pretty well (especially since the rest of the squad can peg it with krak grenades).

IMO the vanguards are glasshammer if barebones(not like deldar to be sure but still ..), if kitted out they are good but don't justify their points cost... when i play (ed) black templars i had great success with taking say 7,8 of them with a chaplain attached in a land raider. It will wreck stuff bad, provided that the land raider survives, meaning you would need a distraction in the form of another land raider 15 strong crusader squad with an optional captain/chapter master attached

One perk of the VVs is the ability to multi-assault without penalty. So you can have the mad bomber trash a tank while the rest of the squad mulches something else. If you are going to face off against a parking lot, you might be able to get a few.

But as a suicide unit, you are going to get shot up.

That's a nice unit. Note that DS is not the only option - in many cases it's just better to jump across the board hiding behind blos. They're a threat to enemy vehicles and can be used as a denial zone factor. You'll also find them quite handy when you meet an imperial knight.
