Has anyone bought the tyranids painting guide? I want to get it but really don't want to pay $30 if its only four paint schemes and nothing else.

With so much out there on YouTube, and different painting blogs, I wouldn't recommend buying a painting guide.

I haven't bought the Tyranid guide (haven't even seen the inside of one yet). However:

- I think the general Citadel guide is quite good, and a worthwhile investment if you're starting up. It comes with a video, which is, in my opinion, the best short starter video on the market.

- The Space Wolves guide was great. It had lots of little tips, and it had relatively complex processes with decent instructions for some parts.

- I thought the Dark Eldar painting guide was a terrible value :( There just wasn't much there.

- The ebook only guides vary in quality greatly. The Masterclass Librarian is awesome; while others, like Dark Angels, is a joke. A friend bought it, and I feel bad for him, as there is practically zero value. Models finished with those instructions would only vaguely look like the studio models.

The BEST value is the free videos on GW's youtube page (featuring Duncan). They are very, very well made.

I own the book, whilst its thicker than the codex it offers very little content.

Most of the lore info is already in the codex, it lists three custom hives one red with patterned carapace, one basically leviathan scheme (as in near identical) and another scheme that looks similar to a normal one.
They really missed the opportunity to offer some interesting hives such as chemical worlds, radioactive nids or ice world schemes.

Thats half the book, some basic hive info and unit info you already know. The rest of the book is painting tutorials on how to make these three hives, its offers basic thumbnail images with some basic text telling you what paint to use and how to apply, its very spartan so whilst you can apply some of these ideas to your painting they really pander to people wanting to make similar schemes to leviathan and other established schemes so don't expect any real super originality coming through the pages.

All in all I'd say its not worth the price and any online tutorial offers just as much information. GW actually have a tutorial vid out on youtube for painting a tyranid unit and that basically offers all the info you need and will find in the pages of the book..
