As the title suggests I was wondering how well Legion of the Damned, Inquisition, Knights, Assassins and Forgeworld units help cover the weaknesses of the Scions? Looking at it Inquisition offers Psyker support, durable vehicles, cheap units. The Legion offers a very durable, very damaging unit. Assassins each offer something to help the Scions in a specific goal. The Knight is a fire magnet that can keep the heat off your squishy Scions and Forgeworld fliers are also really good.
I ask this because I love the Militarum Tempestus and the way that minidexes offer a build a bear workshop kind of thing and would love to build a force of all the different Imperiums Special Forces.
On my phone so hasnt got all that I wanted to ask but thats the gist of it.

Forgeworld recently said that MT has access to all the FW vehicles that AM has. What Scions lack is good AA, which you can easily get from Forgeworld.
Other options include:
MT/INQ/GK: Basically Inquisitorial Storm Troopers. An Inquisitor with servo skulls gives deepstrike accuracy while GKs give assault power and access to Dreadknights, which are one of the better MCs.
MT/SoB/INQ: See above, but replace assault with lots of fire.
MT/KNTS: Imperial Knights take up a lot of points, but provide a lot of firepower and distract opponents from your Scions.
Assassins are always good, so sprinkle them to taste in any of the above lists. Preferably the Callidus, which gives you great anti-TEQ power, or the Vindicare, to help deal with high AV vehicles or high Toughness MCs.
The Vindicare is also great for sniping out HQ units to net you Slay the Warlord.
My plan is to run Scions with 2 assassins while throwing in a pair of Avenger fighters from FW. They give anti-air while still giving me lascannons for anti-tank, something that scions lack outside of deepstriking melta.

Rule #1 is Look Cool.
Rule #2 is Do Cool S*%* Even If It's Tactically Inadvisable
Winning is something like Rule #17.

I use an allied IG contingent to cover my blank spots. My Militarum Tempestus do okay against most lists, though they can suffer a great deal against flyer heavy forces which is where the Astra Militarum really help out.
Inquisition can let you scout a Taurox Prime, which is cool.

Obviously it really depends on how much you want to have consistent fluff for your force, but there are plenty of options there.
Many of the advantages have already been mentioned, but you can also get really cheap, killy CC units from the Inquisition. I almost always have some crusaders and DCA's (plus a 10 point psyker, because why not) in my IG lists.
I've often thought about doing an MT army for probably the same reasons you love them -- cool concept, awesome models, etc. If I were to do it, I'd go totally aerial with the MT and then ally in three Manticores or something like that.
Actually, what would be perfect for you is primary Air MT and the Steel Host formation from Sanctus Reach: It's a Tank Commander and Three Leman Russ Squads (which can be just one LR) plus a hydra. Everything within 12" of the commander gets preferred enemy. That'll give you AA, and tough ground firepower while the rest of your stuff is buzzing around in flyers or deep-striking in.

I went with the Ground Assault type idea. i love making the A-Team theme music whenever they enter the baord from reserve. Too much fun.
But the reality is, Militarum Tempestus is for the aesthetic. it is somewhere SQUARELY in the middle and that's ONLY if the General is good. But as complicated as the army plays (and you wouldn't think it was...but it is), it gives you a lot of room for error and for dice calamity.
Still I have had a LOT of fun playing and painting it and my record is good overall. Certain matchups are death sentences though unless you ally in some IG help. Specifically in the anti-air department.

If you're going ground, I'd probably still take leman russes as they make nice tough AV14 shields for a few of those paper-thin Tauroxen for a turn at least. They might be too slow for you to keep hiding behind them if you're wanting to alpha strike but if you have one you want to protect a bit longer, it's a good idea. Also the Leman Russ exterminator makes for a good AA platform in a pinch.

I ally my Scions with Deathwing and Inquisition, to get safer deep striking and take attention away from my scions. No-one seems to care about them when 5 hammernators just appeared behind their warlord's unit.
