So I just found out that someone is planning to really cheese-up a tournament I plan on attending soon. It is using a Highlander format, so everything is restricted to one of any given unit at 1500pts, aside from troops and dedicated transports which are unlimited.

Of course someone just had to skirt the spirit of things by going for nightscythes in abundance.

Now that we know to expect this, (thanks to a gentle, sly wink from the event organizer), what are good options to counter this?

I am playing Grey Knights with Space Wolf allies, and do currently have a Stormraven with TL Las and Melta in my list. Beyond that... is there much of anything I can do?

What missions are you playing? Night Scythes aren't as strong in 7th as they were in 6th since they can't do things like sit on objectives which hovering flyers can do. Storm Talons are better overall in 7th.

Probably you can just ignore them and deal with the troops they drop and playing to the mission.

I agree although if you do want to try and kill them then a stormraven, a stormwolf and combat squaded purifiers should do the trick. Or hell even airwolf to combat cron air.

So - this highlander format doesn't stop WS spam?

Oh dear

Do Space Wolves have access to Stalkers? Or Stormtalons? (I don't have the codex).

Are you sure you haven't misunderstood the format? Because no limits on dedicated transports kinda defeats the purpose of Highlander in the first place.

Oh... I know. The event organizer is going case-by-case and framed the event as a fun, and casual one, that just happens to have a larger number of players.

Its modified BAO for scenarios, etc, with some kind of BAO inspired Maelstrom alternative (its new to me, so I just can't explain it elegantly).

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I see a few people mentioning combat-squaded Purifiers which I am taking.

Can I ask why?

I assume the implication is that the Cleansing Flame nova hits zooming flyers just fine?

My opinion is to play to the mission and not worry too much about the flyer spam. I used to run necron flyer spam myself, and found it really lacks in it's scoring ability as the game wears on.

If the Necron player is smart he'll also take a unit of wraiths, a d lord and maybe a douche canoe to balance the list a bit. If the player goes full on flyer spam... you should have the advantage if you have a good balanced list (which is equipped to deal with flyers, of course)

Crisis averted, as the event organizer added an emergency restriction of 0-2 Wave Serpents or Nightscythes, as people were starting to game the format.

I hate that people were trying to pull this at a fun, and casual event.

So in a highlander format they are still letting 2 of cheese? Seriously?
