I've trying to come up with ideas for a tournament list and wondered why lone 10 man tact squads in rhinos arent more popular in 7th edition. I mean for 190 points you get 3 Obsec units that are fairly under the raider with a melta/ multi melta.

Rhinos are squishy. Tac squads don't have very good firepower for their price. You pay a lot of points for all their special rules, inflated statline, and 3+ save. Bike troops are better in almost every way.

Which is not to say that they're useless in tournament lists. Some tournament Ravenguard armies rely almost entirely on tactical squads in Rhinos. Competitive Ultramarines lists will feature lots of tactical squads in drop pods.

Drop Pods are significantly better than Rhinos for the same price.

They're not bad and are actually great for ravenguard with a free 12' scoutmove.
That's just tacticals require you to play...tactical. And not just spam the shootiest killiest stuff and drown everything in dakka without much thought. Thus many people discard them. However, as soon as maelstorm is in play - they're doing fine.

But yep, many lists benefit from undercosted droppods more. Not all, however. If you focus on board controle instead of alpha-strike, rhinos definitely have a place.

Because Bikes are faster, shootier, harder to kill and more efficient. Tacticals are the most underwhelming troop choice in the game, Rhinos are trash and die to a stiff glance, no pun intended. The specialist firepower of Tacs isn't enough, the anti-infantry firepower is mediocre at the very best and useless at worst, while their defense that you pay out the ass for counts for nothing with the abundance of Marine killers you can get.

This edition is take Scouts or take Bikes or go home.
