So I'm looking to bolster my mech chaos force by including a Tau Farsight Allied Detachment, however, I am unsure as to how to best equip them for TAC purposes. So let's say I have five regular suits and one commander at my disposal. I want to keep the unit mobile and dedicated to taking out TEQ/MEQ squads before jumping away. What would be the best size for the unit, the best upgrades and the best number of drones to take alongside them if I want to keep the unit under 500 points? Thanks!

Well initially not a bad set up.

For FE you need 1 full team of crisis suits (so three)
I'm really a fan of double missile suits for this unit because it's a decent amount of high str + good ranged shooting and you can JSJ to keep them relatively safe. These guys are good at dealing with light-to-medium armor as well as monstrous creatures. - you could add in marker drones and a drone controller in larger games)

and for your commander I think the most utilitarian build for him is the "Mark'O" (usually 2 Missile Pods, Target Lock, Drone Controller with 2 marker drones who joins a squad of marker drones [4-6]) You can then add in the signature system 'talisman of arthas moloch' to give you a slight psychic defense as well as a decent invulnerable (5++)

for your two remaining suits I would consider equipping them with two plasma rifles or fusion blasters - usually a debate on this but both serve a solid purpose.
Fusion - You can take them as single man commando units to deep strike and try to take out armor
Plasma - Run them in a group(or single) and hunt TEQ/MEQ using marker lights to buff.

Add drones at your discretion - these are mostly for ablative wounds for your suits.
Gun Drones - Generally the more practical drone - and meshes well with the shorter ranges of plasma, burst and fusion.
Marker Drones - Useful, but if you decide on a mark'o you probably wont need more marker support for your detatchment.
Shield Drones - Almost useless - however can provide some tedium for your opponents if you're lucky with 4++

The signature weapons are neat (the Airbursting Frag Projector / Cyclic Ion Blaster ) but considering the other options and the short range of these weapons it's generally best left with more aggressive builds I think/ for fun.
Hope this was helpful!

Thanks! For Double Missile Pods, are you referring to twin-linking them or buying two sets of regular missile pods per suit?

Generally - with marker support - it's best to have two weapons for the VoF. 12 Missile Shots at Str 7 is better than 6 with marker support. Essentially.

However, it could be worth it to upgrade one of the fusion guns to be twin linked (and keep the second gun as well) if you're dead-set on getting a hit and can allow the points. (Though the same rule applies here)

Are you planning on including markerlights? Because if you just want to run suits with your chaos, I'd run 3 missle suits with a shooty commander then 2 lone fusion suits. Give them all twin linked weapons.

If your chaos list has meltas, give the lone suits plasma instead. Tau plasma still wounds T4 on 2s and IDs T3, but doesnt Get Hot.

I'd also make sure that at least 1 suit in each unit has vectored retro thrusters, to make sure you can avoid CC.

Rule #1 is Look Cool.
Rule #2 is Do Cool S*%* Even If It's Tactically Inadvisable
Winning is something like Rule #17.
