Some custom Sternguard I made up the other day. Repurposed CSMs, they've come back to the emperors light!

CnC welcome, but not expected! Hahahahahahaha!

I like the servo skulls, they are a subtle but nice conversion. I'd grubby up the models a little, maybe some typhus corrosion streaks or weathering powder, they all look very clean atm.

Everyone keeps saying too bright too bright, but lI am just not sold on the idea.

Old WD article written by John Blanche said that he had 2 rules about painting, keep it neat, keep it bright and always always always thin your paints.

I personally like the look of them. I've already tried the grimy battle worn look and to me it just looks messy. Some people can do the battle effects quite well, but I find that it's more my style to do as ol John says. I have an entire army of "dirty" marines and I hate them. Reprinting the whole works. You shoulda seen how grubby theses guys were before I stripped them and redid em!

Nice! I actually like the clean look better than the weathered look, except on units with tread (like tanks).

I think the bases could use more contrast, though, and the units themselves a little more definition (darker recesses and brighter highlights). For instance, the feathers on the chest eagle on the fella on the right is not well defined, but that could also be the photograph.

The visor lens are very cleanly painted (good) but they look a bit flat. Again, that could be the photo, but if it's not, taking a very fine brush and just washing the edges with a brown (like agrax) might do the trick to give them some depth.

Servo skulls are a win!

Oh damn you Talys! Not literally though!

I had the same thoughts too, the bases don't pop the way they should. I just didn't want to redo them! But I wonder... If I took a darker grey and did the trim around the base edge would that help? I have a pot full of this weird pseudo space wolves grey a buddy of mine mixed for me and I was thinking that would provide a great contrast.

As it stands now the edges on the bases are done with uluthan grey, which is also the base colour for the white on the marines. So yeah... Good tip but dang it! More work!

In truth I really wanted someone to point that out, because it was bugging me too. I was daunted by the thought of doing 40+ marine bases!

About the depth issue... I'm not sure we can blame the camera, it's an iPad camera and I'm told that it's very good. In an effort to maintain the bright clean look I tried to wash very lightly with army painter strong tone, and I did thin it with water as well, but a dash of undiluted wash in a few areas would do wonders.

Also... Do they look like suitable sternies? Or do they still look too chaos-y?

If I plunked these guys down on the table and said these are stern guard would you believe me? Would you play against these guys?
