I have a few old
RT era rhinos, some un-built. Despite the lack of detail, I still like the look of these. But when placed next to the current model, they're way to small. So I've scratch built a revisionist version of the side unit that is just a bit smaller then the current version by
GW. It's also designed to work with either the hull of the
RT rhino, or with a bit of cutting, the current kit. I ran out of resin, so I only got one pair of parts cast. But I'll post images of it bult witht the MkIIc hull as well.
This is the pattern that I designed. The doorway is designed to use a current rhino ramp door, or a slightly larger version of a round hatch.
One scratch side unit was built from 1mm plastic card. This was detailed, and a rubber mold was pulled. The brown color is from using bronzing powder in my molds to reduce surface bubbles. The treads and wheels are cast separately as a unit, and glued on. The circle in the middle is a recessed area.
The upper hull is half a
RT rhino hull combined with plastic card to bulk it out some. And I can stretch one kit to build two models. The
RT Rhino parts are from a very badly built model I got off Ebay. You can see that I've only glued stacks on one side.
The side units are 12mm wide, close to the current Rhino kit. With 8mm wide treads.

This is with the round door added and a pair if exhaust pipes. I need to make a gang mold of two doors and 4 pipes.
This shows the overall size, combined with the body from a MKIIc Rhino
Some images to compare.
Old School, bu this was all there was when I began playing.
This Forgeworld kit takes the MkIIc and makes it even bigger! And still has the inset cut away's that I don't like.
