The Warp

Played in Counter Attack, a small tournament run in Edinburgh at the weekend. Wheeled out my Farsight force for the 2nd tourney in a couple of months, and was great fun. Was 5 games, and forge world stuff was allowed, as well as super fortification stuff. Won 3, lost 2.

Game wise I probably couldve done better, but aside from this event and the one in October I hadn't played much at all this year or any 7th ed.

Here's what i used:

Farsight Envlaves (CAD)

Commander, x2 MP's, target lock x 2 marker drones

x 3 XV8's, x 2 MP's, target locks, x 4 marker drones
x 3 XV8's, x 2 burst cannons, x 4 gun drones
x 2 fusion XV8's
x 2 fusion XV8's

Iontide, fusion, stimm injector, early warning override
Bursttide, Earth Caste Pilot, SMS, velocity tracker, stimm injector

Longstrike!!! 2 seeker missiles, SMS, sensor spines, railgun, d-pod
Skyray, BSF, sensor spines

Allies - Tau Empire

Buffmander with all his buff gear
x 6 Fire Warriors

Was quite happy with this army at my previous event were I came 4th in a strong field, aside from Longstrike hammerhead - was gonna get rid of this and put in a unit of missilesides but I've been too busy (lazy) to build and paint them.

May be a bit sketchy on my opponents armies since I didn't write them down.

Games:

Round 1- Grey Knights. Scouring & Big Guns combo.

Opponent's list -

Level 3 Librarian in Terminator armour, liber daemonica? (not good with GK stuff..)
x 3 servo skulls
x 6 Terminators, psycannon, x 3 hammers
x 5 Terminators, psycannon, x 2 hammers
x 5 Interceptors, psycannon
squad of servitors & monkeys
squad of servitors & monkeys
Stormraven, lascannon MM
Inquisitor
x 3 chaff guys
Dreadknight, jump move thing, sword, incinerator, psilencer
Dreadknight, jump move thing, sword, incinerator, psilencer
Dreadknight, jump move thing, sword, incinerator, psilencer

Was a bit worried about this as he was going first, and the uber psilencer now being force was gonna be quite scary as it can instagib my buffmander and unit, or Riptides fairly easily.

Result:

16-4 win, after i assaulted a dreadknight turn 1 with my 650+ pts commander/crisis squad and got them run down :-\ . Almost tabled him, only game were I scored a reasonably big win.

Round 2 - Flying Tyranids. Leviathin/Skyblight?? Mission - Maelstrom, contact lost

Leviathan?
Flyrant, two twin linked devourers with electroshock grubs
Flyrant, two twin linked devourers with electroshock grubs
Flyrant, two twin linked devourers with electroshock grubs

x 2 squads of minimal rippers

Hive crone
Harpy
Harpy

x 2 deep strike bomb things
Malanthrope

Bastion, comms relay

Skyblight?
Flyrant, two twin linked devourers with electroshock grubs

Gargoyles
Gargoyles
Gargoyles - that all respawn!!

I know nids are supposedly a good match up for Tau, but this went poorly for me. I went first, didn't do a great deal, and then 6 FMC's came on turn 2 and started wailing on me, taking out the skyray first up as a bit of a threat (to like 1 FMC maybe!) I played the mission and was quite ahead on maelstrom pts until the last turn, where I just lost too much stuff and my opponent, who is a friend of mine, went ahead big time.
Killed 3 flyrants and a harpy, but I lost the overwhelming majority of my stuff. 13-7 loss, which in the end up I was reasonably happy with.

Round 3 - Iron Hands & FW knight - with an apocalypse flamer thing. Mission - Kill pts and Emperor's Will

Iron Hands
Chapter master, shield, hammer, bike auspex
5 bikes, x 2 grav, combi-grav
5 scouts, CCW, land speeder storm, flamer
5 marines, plasma & combi-plasma. Pod
5 Sternguard, x 4 combi-melta. Pod
5/6 (can't remember) Helios missile launchers

Allies - Ultramarines
Tigurius
9 Honour guard with mix of mauls, axes & swords, chapter banner. Pod
one of the troops above must've been smurfs too

Forge World Knight thing with big flamer.

15-5 loss. This was much closer than it looks on pts but thats life i suppose. Killed stupid knight first up, but Chapter Master Noob Pwner killed both.riptides & had a unit of honour guard tearing Tau up. Even after i intercepted them with an Ion accelerator killing half of them for lulz. Got to give it to my opponent though, good player. Very methodical and on the ball.

Round 4 - TWC & Wolf Guard SW. Maelstrom - Cleanse & Control

Space Wolves

Wolf Lord, thunderwolf, x 2 chaff wolf things, ap2 sword, runic armour, storm shield
Iron Priest, storm shield? thunderwolf, x 2 chaff wolf things
5 Thunderwolves, mix of wargear, couple of shields
Rune Priest, jump pack

5 jump pack SW

5 wolf guard, 4 meltas, pod
5 Blood Claws

10 Grey Hunters, x2 melta, Rhino
10 Grey Hunters, x 2 melta, Rhino

5 Wolf Guard on bikes

Horrible Space Wolves flyer

Having lost 2 games already on the saturday, was activating Sunday beast mode! Determined not to lose, though this guy had beaten Tau twice already. Had a tough time killing the TWC and i thought I was getting backed up too much by trying to avoid combat that i wasnt scoring enough Maelstrom, but in the end I wiped him aside from 5 jump pack dudes & a rune priest. Was a really good, tense game. If I hadn't have focused absoltely everything on the TWC and lords unit turn 2 he would have had a big win I reckon. Space Wolves fliers are horrible..
12-8 win

Round 5 - Tau/Farsight with Forge World Riptide thing. Relic & Crusade combined

Farsight

Cadre Fireblade
x 3 double plasma crisis suits, intercept
x 3 burst cannon/flamer suitsSingle double fusion suit
single double fusion suit
Pirhanna
Rh'vanna??

Tau Empire

Buffmander
11 Fire Warriors, devilfish
17 kroot, shaper,
12 kroot, sniper rounds
6 pathfinders
6 pathfinders
3 x HYMP/SMS broadsides, marker drones

Rhianna riptide thing haunts my dreams for ever more. It utterly destroys things with the bulky or very bulky/extremely bulky unit types. Needless to say it absolutely trolls crisis suits big time. Turns out I ignored it as I didnt get the opportune moment to kill it. However from what I hear there was someone who utterly ragequit life from it being used on his artillery . Scored most of the crusade objectives & some secondaries whilst opponent got relic. 11-9 win. Another very good, fun game that either of us could've won on the last turn.

Army summary:

What was Win?

- Iontide had a boss tourney. Splattered countless Emprahs Astartes & dreadknights, intercepting marines for lolz out of pods, pie plating them and even wiped a whole unit of broadsides & 5 drones in one shot (ftotally saved me that game!) Honourable mention for MP crisis team, did well, but with the amount of pts it bloody better!

What was just fail?

- was tempted to say Longstrike here, he doesnt really make pts back, but helped against the knight & TWC wolves. But the Skyray did nuthin all tourney. Dishonourable mention for BOTH units terrible units of fusion suits, did absolutely nuthin I wanted them to do the whole bloody tourney. Consistently doing stuff like 1 hit out of four on land speeders and failing to blow them up, but quite happy to like smoke 4 gargoyles or kroot or other chaff like that! Useless so and so's....

Workhorse unit -

ECPA bursttide. concsistently killed stuff all weekend

Again, had a blast, 5 great games against 4 people that I thought were great sports and good players and one against a buddy of mine, so a fine weekend.

Was this the Caledonian? How'd you end up doing overall?

With all the new stuff coming out for bugs, they are now a top-tier army IMO. Do you know how your Tyranid opponent did at the tournament?

Thanks for sharing.

thanks for reading buddy.

No this wasn't Caledonian Uprising, that's in mid January and sadly as I have a course for work I can't go. 180 players, it would be awesome. I would've taken a similar army to the one I ran here if I did go, minus longstrike for either another MP crisis unit or some broadsides.

Overall I was slap bang in the midfield. A bit dissapointed, considering I did well (4th) at my previous event that had a lot of ETC players in it. This event allowed a lot of forge world and crazy stuff like Macro cannons, av 15 buildings and there was even a Reaver titan... didn't do that well though

My Nids opponent came 6th overall, as he was doing well he had to play against a Transcendent C'tan in one of his later games which wasn't great for him, think he lost that. He is also the best player I know, and a big fan of the hive mind, so I reckon he'll be making the 7 FMC list wreak havoc at Cally Uprising.

Thanks for sharing!

I run a list similar to yours but I swap the skyray and Longstrike for 2 Tetras, another burstTide, and some upgrades on the commanders. That gives more markerlights for the fusion suits to use as well as the potential for a no-scatter deepstrike for them or the Burst suits.

That Nid list looks scary as hell, and seems to be what a couple Nid players are eyeing to take to tournaments...*gulp*

Allies as in an Allied Detachment? (I'm guessing so by the one Troop)

Sadly an illegal list under 7th Ed. The Allies system has changed, and is now a relationship between units.

From the Farsight book - “may ally together as Battle Brothers.”
Units of different Factions from two different Detachments (CAD's for example) are Allied together, as per the new allies rules.
This is not the same as "may be taken in an Allied Detachment".

6th ed you could do this, 7th ed has a restriction on having the same Faction (in this case Tau and Tau) in an Allied Detachment.

It's a common mistake, and a hangover from the last edition, but you need to put your Farsight (or Tau Empire) allies in a CAD, you can no longer use an Allied Detachment.

Unless of course your Tournament has houseruled differently?

@ Grendel083

Now I am going to appear quite thick here, are you stating that I can't take Farsight with Tau allies, or that if I do they must be a CAD?

From my understanding you can take Farsight with Tau, as it says in the Farsight book and with codices since 7th ed hit (tyranids for example) being able to ally with themselves.

However if you say that I can but requires a CAD then I missed that, and it would be an honest mistake. Having only played 7th ed at two tournaments, I have handed my lists in before the events and the organisers haven't pulled me up for fielding an illegal list. I generally (and my gaming friends will tell you, I almost always forget to read tourney rules packs) go by the assumption that the organisers know more than I do.

Will check my rulebook when I get home tonight and see what to make of it. If I have to take a Tau CAD then thats what I'll do, its no big deal.

You can take them as allies, just not in an Allied Detachment.

The new detachment system is a bit strange, you don't need to be in an Allied Detachment in order to be allies.

The Allies rule really doesn't have much to do with the Allied Detachment, oddly enough.

How did you employ your ECPA bursttide? Any markerlight support? What kind of targets did it chew through? How much heavy lifting did the secondary (SMS?) weapon system do? And did you ever choose to ripple fire the ignores-cover SMS in lieu of the over-charged HBC?

But you may be convincing me to switch to using one!

Generally when the skyray didn't suck and die I'd use that to tag team the bursttide, lighting up targets for the HBC on nova charge. The SMS was awesome, and there were times when if I'd lost the skyray and my crisis star team had more pressing issues with their markerlights (rather than stripping cover for the bursttide) then I'd nova the ignoring cover SMS for clearing chaff troops off objectives if they'd went to ground or out of LOS, worked a treat.

I know it looks an odd build to have SMS, burstcannon & skyfire, but it was really there to nuke FMC's and to put a ton of saves on MEQ's, both of which it has done really well over the last two tournies. The event before the one detailed here, it wreaked havoc on an FMC daemons army. It couldn't save me from the flyrant swarm, but it did chalk two tyrants in amongst the slaughtering I recieved. Well worth it. It also did well to plug away putting wounds on the TWC space wolves, as the Iontide is actually less effective when it has a T5 3++ save 6+FNP warlord tanking wounds from the ion accelerator, but the burstide can make them forced to take lots of saves instead of just 2/3 3++.

I like the build, but wouldn't take a 2nd, as I think the burst cannon can be quite poor without ECPA backing it up
