looking through the Stronghold Assault book and seeing that promethium relay pipes are bad to take cover behind, but can take obstacles - one of which is barricades, of which it can take 6.

so can you lose the downside of extra hits on 6's by standing in front of a promethium relay but behind a barricade bought for it, giving you all the benefits and none of the problems for 20-60 points more (depending on the amount of cover you want, I imagine 2 is the minimum to be useful)?

I also didn't see anything mentioning their length.

thinking burnas in a battlewagon surrounded by the barricades with the promethium pipes behind, a huge torrent firebase!

Barricades are 6" long, as described earlier in the book. Also, only infantry on foot can make use of the torrent rule, so no hiding burnaz in battlewagons.

still a pimp master idea for vet squads with a heavy flamer and 2 reg flamers each. or CCS/PCS with spammed flamers.

Or even better do a void relay network...

The best models to use a promethium pipeline are probably crisis suits. Their carrier cost is very small relative to the firepower they get, and the models that carry them are relentless -- largely mitigating the change to a heavy weapon profile.

Can't say I'm a big fan of burnas using them, though.
