Subject: [2000] - Tyranids - New to the bugs

I'm currently looking to start an army and want Xenos. Now, I'm totally new to Tyranids and have put together this potential list that makes use of two Wrath of the Hive Mind bundle sets. My question to you, oh seasoned bug player, what are the deficiencies? What will it struggle against? I'm building the army quick style to play a few games against Space Wolves, Grey Knights and Chaos SM - what sort of pitfalls does this list have against power armour and what Tyranid units do well against it?
About me: I like to have fun primarily and as long as my army has a chance, then I'm happy. I'm no WAAC player nor do I despise playing against them, it's all fun to me.
Anyway, the list:
3 Tyrant Guard
Hive Tyrant, Wings, 2x TL Devourer w/ BL Worms
Swarmlord
Zoanthrope brood w/ Neurothrope
5x Rippers
20x Termagants w/ Devourers
20x Termagants w/ Devourers
3x Warriors, Venom Cannon
3x Warriors, Venom Cannon
Hive Crone
Tyrannofex w/ Rupture Cannon
Tyrannofex w/ Rupture Cannon
Comes out to 1990. Seems like a fun army to me, but I have zero experience with Nids, never used them or played against them. I would kinda like some Genestealers. Would you go with the 2 starter boxes I'm thinking of or would you go with 1 and then more MC's? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

First, your flyrant needs electroshock grubs. It will take the last 10 points and give you some AV. I see what you are doing with the rupture cannons on the tyrannofexes, you are going to struggle against heavy vehicle armies. Unfortunately, they are only bs3, so are going to miss half of the time. Most of the time people run them with acid spray to avoid issues caused by their low bs. I am not sold on the Swarmlord being particularly beneficial for your list; he is a lot of points and you are not really going to be using his ability to modify reserve rolls. I think you'd be better off with another flyrant, as it seems to be the go-to build and the unit is just so flexible. It'd also save you a few points and money, since you can drop the tyrant guard too with that option.

Not a terrible list, but it does have "issues" I suggest you go a little slower...Maybe buy one Wrath of the Hive Mind, and a second Tyrant. If you want a gaggle of Genestealers the Sheild of Baal looks to be a great value, and includes some sort of "super" Broodlord, and a Formation. You can always swap the Space Marines for more figures later. (it also contains a copy of the rules etc...)
Once you play a few games you'll have a better idea of what sort of list suits your style. I've found that Termagants work best when you dilute them, so maybe set 1/2 with Devourers, and the other half plain/Spinefist...
I personally really like Tyranofex, Acid, Thorax Hive (Electr-bugs, or Shredder bettles) and Adrenal Gland. You should also look at force multipliers, like Venothropes, Malanthropes, and/or Zoanthropes...they all help make the rest of the army better. Carnifex are also very good "Big Bugs" as well.(and they tend to do well vs Space marines )

This is really helpful stuff man, thanks! Just on the Swarmlord; I know he isn't the CC monster he used to be but if I were to drop him, would you have any recommendations for a solid CC HQ?

You know, Genestealers and Carnifexes are some of my favourite Tyranids, so I might just do that. I'm going to have a look at my options and see what I can come up with.
The Tyrannofex seems to be a bit iffy with the cannon then! Something to think about!

I think if you want high strength shots just get a barbed heiridule. I believe it comes in at a little more than the 2 tyrannofexs but has 12 str 10 shots at bs 3

The problem with swarmy and the other tyranid hqs isnt that they are bad in melee. They are quite capable against most enemies besides units with nice invulns and lots of high strength, low ap attacks. No, their main issue is a lack of really good options to actually get into combat quickly. Swarmy and any other walking tyrant only gets to move six inches a turn with a run. That is too easy for your enemy to either just outmaneuver or focus your hq down, and they will be focused down. Tyrants are one of our best units and a source of synapse in a not-too-difficult to kill package. Wings will alleviate the speed issue and help immensely in getting your tyrant to survive enemy shooting, but the change in seventh where you have to spend a turn on the ground before you can charge opens him up to the same survivability issues as the walking variety. He is just too vulnerable on the ground and even if you do get him in melee, he is going to be bogged down quite easily by any tarpit unit.
In my eyes, the new skytyrant formation is our best hope for a melee tyrant. He has two squads of ablative wounds with his gargoyle bodyguards and though he may not swoop, he still gets 12 inches a turn. If you decide to go this route, it will require a major redesign of your list though. As pinecone said, maybe only start with one wrath of the hive mind box. Its a good base, and you can proxy models for a while until you decide on a build direction you want to take.
