So I've heard about this project. Basically, you build an army, painting 10% each month (so a 2000 point army would be 200 points per month). I've decided to start my own project in January, as a way to get my lazy self to start painting. I figure, new year, new attitude, new army.

And herein lies the issue. I've decided I want to do Imperium, as I already have 2 Xenos armies. I do not want to do SoB, as the models are pretty much only available via GW, and I Do not want IG, as I don't want a Horde army.

This pretty much limits it to Space Marines.

So now for you SM players out there - which Chapter? Remembering that this is not being done for a super-competitive army make your case for which Chapter I should try to paint.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

I´d say Blood Angels as they are just about to launch and probably have some new cool fun stuff.

And well, GK are pretty cool and a bit different. On average they can be painted quite fast, and being an elite army there´s not a ton of them.

Out of the SM Codex, I´d say go for the Iron Hands or their successor chapter - you´ll atleast have a solid CT that allows perhaps a little more freedom in form of unit choices ( mainly vehicles getting a pretty nice boost. ) They also have great miniatures available from Forgeworld.

I voted “other”

Crimson Fists. Classic, iconic, but without a lot of the baggage of other chapters. Good all-around CT, which lends itself to a very solid army, playing to the fluffy strengths of the marines. (without having to paint the yellow of the IFs)

Same here. I would love to see more Crimson Fists models.

I agree. CF have the best back story of any chapter, IMO.

I am thinking about doing this project as well, but I will be doing Blood Angels since I already have a Crimson Fist army.

Create your own chapter!

This allows you to paint your guys however you wish. Have a cool scheme in your head? Do it!

This also allows you to play ANY power armor dex (including CSM). Feel like having your Assault Marines as troops? Run BA. Want to roll a ton of dice? Run DA with the Banner of Deveatation. The list goes on..

As much as I love modeling and painting an existing army, I've had way more fun with the endless flexibility of a DIY chapter.

I'd say salamanders, though any bright green chapter would get my vote. I've recently started my own chapter, The Jade Angels, and have found them to be refreshingly simple to paint as green seems to be quite a forgiving colour

Well, the new BA Tactical kit looks utterly beautiful from what we've seen, and only a quid more than the already-awesome SM Tacticals. So if I were in market for starting a new Chapter right now, BA would almost certainly be the best pick, and if you don't like red, they have some awesome Successors.

Carcharodons.....because space sharks. Perhaps your company recruited from the tough streets of a hive world. Maybe you could recruit these guys https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqGQyMF5a_0

On a serious note though, they are pretty awesome and their background (The Badab War) is interesting.

I would say DA, obviously, as they are my favorite chapter. GK are fun psychic, but very small model count. BA could be cool, but I would be careful playing an army you don't know what's coming out.

That leaves the others, and I would argue Imperial Fists, Iron Hands, or Ultramarines. Ultramarines are kind of underrepresented and have some cool Chapter Tactics. Imperial Fists and Iron Hands are also cool and just have strong CT.

Salamanders. Not only is it a competitive army, but green is super easy to paint.

On it for Salamanders as well. The green can be done in a variety of shades and look good. Significant fluff and a good general theme for weaponry. Also due to their familiarity with older tech, you can place heresy Era pieces in the army and not have it look unusual, but rather fluffier...yeah I think that's a word...

Crimson Fists for fun and Imperial Fists if you want the fun on the painting table. But given the way the game is played now, taking the Crimson Fist Chapter Master makes Sternguard Obj Sec, and they're already being drop-podded in most of the time, plus the Imperial Fist tactics helping Devastators with Tank Hunters, it's hard not to like them on the table.

On the other hand. Yellow.

The best two, depending on how much you want to do conversions, would be Carcharodons and Iron Hands. The latter is more competitive and would have a more futuristic look, but the former would simply look...brutal. I remember how on the old GW site there was a dude that had a 2500 point army of them that simply looked amazing.

Well, I voted for Black Templars since they have a nice fluff
and despite the SM codex it is still possible to build a decent army.

Carharodorons or Minotaurs for me. I plan on building both!

"Because the Wolves kill cleanly, and we do not. They also kill quickly, and we have never done that, either. They fight, they win, and they stalk back to their ships with their tails held high. If they were ever ordered to destroy another Legion, they would do it by hurling warrior against warrior, seeking to grind their enemies down with the admirable delusions of the 'noble savage'. If we were ever ordered to assault another Legion, we would virus bomb their recruitment worlds; slaughter their serfs and slaves; poison their gene-seed repositories and spend the next dozen decades watching them die slow, humiliating deaths. Night after night, raid after raid, we'd overwhelm stragglers from their fleets and bleach their skulls to hang from our armour, until none remained. But that isn't the quick execution the Emperor needs, is it? The Wolves go for the throat. We go for the eyes. Then the tongue. Then the hands. Then the feet. Then we skin the crippled remains, and offer it up as an example to any still bearing witness. The Wolves were warriors before they became soldiers. We were murderers first, last, and always!" —Jago Sevatarion
