The Warp

Decided to put this in tactics rather than list forum as its more about personal preferences and tactics than help with the whole list.

So recently I played in two tournaments, coming 4th in the first one (and oddly in the more competitive evet) and finishing mid table at the 2nd one, which allowed all crazy forge world etc, but a harsher scoring regime. This is the list I used:

Farsight Faction

Commander, x 2 Missile Pods, Target lock, two marker drones (Warlord)

Troops

3 XV8's, x 2 Missile Pods each, target lock, bonded, 4 marker drones
3 XV8's, x 2 Burst cannons each, bonded, 4 gun drones
2 XV8's, x 2 Fusion blasters each, bonded
2 XV8's, x 2 Fusion blasters each, bonded

Elite
Iontide, Fusion Blaster, Early Warning Override, stimm injector
Burstide, SMS, Velocity tracker, stimulant injector, earth caste pilot array

Heavy
Hammerhead, Longstrike Upgrade (blacksun filter included, tank hunters special rule, preferred enemy Imperial Guard/Astra Militarum) x 2 seekers, submunition rounds, disruption pod, sensor spines,
Skyray, Blacksun Filter

Allies - Tau Empire

Buff commander with all the goodies - MSS, Neuroweb, stim injector, shield generator, vector retro thrusters, irdium suit, puretide chip, command and control node, onager gauntlet
6 Fire Warriors

1846 pts

In general, I've been happy with it, aside from hoots of derision driven laughter from my friends regarding Longstrike. He does provide a bit of a threat against knights, but in general he hasn't done a great deal. So looking to put in something that gives my army a bit more oomph. I have struggled with mass 2+ saves, the burst suits provide a great weight of fire and the Iontide is boss at clearing them out, but feel that I need a bit more bang for my bucks. With about 215 pts to spare, my options are:

3 HYMP Broadsides? 195 pts
another Iontide, with skyfire and intercept? 210
A unit of double plasma suits with markerlights? 207
a second unit of burst cannon suits with 4 gun drones? 177

Any ideas? Any other critique of the list would be great, though more looking as to what you'd replace longstrike with

Strike Force Serpentine: 3000
Kabal of the Annihilated Souls: 3000
Red Corsairs: 2500
Knights of Titan: 2000
Waagh Wazzdakka 2000

I'm surprised your tournament let you run this list. The consensus I've seen is that you can't run an allied detachment of Tau Empire with Farsight Enclave because they are from the same faction. The only way to run them together would be to do two separate CAD's as far as I know.

Tactic-wise, I love missile-sides. I think you'd get more output from them than you would from longstrike.

I'm not sure if you intentionally left this out but what about a drone controller for your units with marker drones?

And what about a second Skyray to replace Longstrike? Vs a broadside unit, you'd get more mileage out of the extra marker lights, higher BS, survivability of it being a vehicle with jink, and no leadership checks from losing models in a unit...for around 130 pts after adding a disruption pod? Yes you may run out of missiles but extra marker light support will bring out the beast in your riptides and suits. Also, taking a Skyray leaves room for maybe an extra unit or additional upgrades to existing ones.

Iontides are pretty good vs 2+ saves. And take a drone controller. Broadsides are amazing. Have you looked at the Firebase Support Cadre? I'd drop the buffmander, the firewarriors, the hammerhead and try to fit the list around having this is possible...

@LessthanJeff, where are you seeing that happen? The Farsight book specifically calls out and allows them to ally with the Tau main codex. It has a separate entry on the allies chart within the supplement itself making regular Tau as Battle Brothers.

So wherever you're running into that, you're running into house rules as opposed to general tournament rules.

The farsight codex says ""Farsight Enclave detachments and Codex: Tau Empire detachments may ally together as Battle Brothers". This line allows you to run both farsight enclave and tau empire units in the same army and have them able to join each other in units, buff each other with affects, and not suffer from rules like "one eye open". Basically, it's a level of alliance specification. This is different from them saying you may take an "allied detachment" which is a specific detachment in the main rulebook requiring only one hq and one troop choice.

Do note, I am saying you can take one combined arms detachment of each and that they will be battle brothers with each other. I think many people are confused by this distinction.

The problem is that the "allied detachment" in the main rulebook specifies that units must be from a different faction from the rest of your army and that supplements count as the same faction as the army they supplement.
